Bought a chrome bumper off of Mr Bumper and year ago and installed in this last spring. Nice bumper, er was. It seems it has very fine pin holes you cannot see even under power in the chrome plating. Mr Bumper says your problem. Well was fine all summer etc until this past week when MR NY STATE began to pile on the road salt, now I have rust starting. You can whip it off very easily, but its now to late to begin to try anything to save it. She's gonna look like h*ll come spring.
Question has anyone ever painted over a chrome bumper. I was thinking that if its on like this I maybe able to get away with 80 grit, 180, then 300 sanding. Then use a etching primer before paint. ???? ANyone before I go buy a new black bumper and paint that b*tch to match and screw the chrome!!

Yeah you can paint chrome but the surface has got to be roughed up quite a bit for the paint to stay on.I did a set of Holley valve covers here about 2 months ago.It took awhile but they turned out pretty **** sweet looking.Of course the paint might be a factor too.I used a Paasche brand air brush kit for model cars with PPG paint and it actually worked really well.

Oh and that sucks they don't wanna do right by there crappy work.I think we should start a vendors section or something like that and post our experiences with products just to give our members a heads up before they buy.Of course these would only be opinions and personnal experiences but word of mouth is the best info a person can get.If this idea sounds good to everyone we can get this going.

Yeah I guess sand blasting"or media blasting" would be a whole lot easier lol.I would love to have a small media blaster. It would make things so much easier. You also might wanna get it powder coated Jedi.Ya can't beat powder coating for it's durability.

agreed....you could probably go to any of those bedliner places and have em coat it as well.

+1 on the Sandblasting/bead blasting.

Could also clean the rust off with coke. . .

the problem with powdercoating a bumper comes with the fact that you cannot touch it up. With a bumper you are inevidably going to get chips, and since you cannot touch up powdercoat, it will rust, and begin to flake. For a bumper, id paint, or get an original from a scrap yard. my truck is close to 20 years old, and a little windex makes it look awesome

Yeah but powdercoating is a hundred times more durable than paint and keeps it's shine for good.

OEM Chrome - can't beat it!

well, maybe a professional chromer would take more care.... but my oem chrome bumper still looks brand new after 2 harsh summers and 3 winters so far.

i agree with you max, it is much more durable, but look at the application, it is a bumper, how many rocks a year do you catch on yours? Hundreds, thousands? I agree that it is more durable, but what I am saying is when something happens, which it will, there is no way to touch it up, so it will begin to rust there, and there is a greater chance the powdercoat will flake. On a show truck or a truck that doesnt get many miles, in my opinion there would be no alternative to powdercoat though

One thing I dont have access to is a sandblaster. The others thing end up costing more than I can pick up a black bumper for and then shoot it. If I knew for sure people really having good luck prepping and going over chrome I may attempt to do this one depending on how it looks at the end of winter. If it pits at all, no I wont, learned too many times once pitted it'll come through no matter what you do. I can get a new black one for $79, so thats why I really need to know the success rate versus cost!

You can get powder coating color matched too.It costs more but it will outlast paint.Tman it might get dinged up but it will take more than average rocks and so on to chip the powder coating off. There is also touch up paint for powder coating. It bonds to the powder coating different than regular paint.Have you thought about a bumper cover and airdam to go over the bumper Jedi. They're some nice looking ones available for 2nd gens. Here are some ones I think look sweet.http://www.sicgmtrucks.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=411&stc=1http://www.sicgmtrucks.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=412&stc=1http://www.sicgmtrucks.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=413&stc=1

I just got the bumper and air dam last spring, so a cover would negate a fine air dam!!! I got all diamond clear lights, all chrome grille, the chrome bumper and the air dam to create a different look. You see the pewter top and bottom with all chrome center and the headlights and corners reflect it!
