View Full Version : Custom Spare Tire Mount?

I just got one of those crazy ideas. I dont really carry my spare tire because 1- something is wrong with the thing under the bed 2- I dont want it blocking the view of my chrome differential :D . Id feel alot more comfortable if I did carry along the spare though. I was thinking of making a spare tire mount inside the bed somewhere. Im gonna eventually buy a hard tonneau cover, so it would also be kinda "stealth" too. But I will need to remove the cover and have room inside the bed to fit my atv.

Thoughts/suggestions?

I've been thinking of the same thing. The idea I have in my head is to mount it on an angle.. kinda like a 5th wheel on a rig.

Do you want the mount to be removable?

So it'd be helpful to get measurements for the footprint of the ATV and to know what size spare you have. Then you can do a little planning to see how/where it would fit.

I would do something along the lines of what HHead is talking about but make and weld some brackets to the bed and just use cotter pin to hold the thing down. When you need to take the bracket and tire out just pull those pins and throw the ATV in and you can use it to tie down the ATV as well

better yet.....you can just get a retaining bracket to fit the over the circular hub portion of the rim and a long bolt. drill a hole in the truck bed and weld a nut to the underside of the bed. Then all you have to do is unscrew that bolt and take the tire out. And its like you never modded the bed

off-road suppliers should carry that type of carrier. I looked into getting one for my '84 yota a long time ago but I can't remember the name of the manufacturer

That's more or less what I did when I moved the spare to under my Miata's truck.. & let me tell you it trippled my trunk space. haha

speaking of atvs being hauled in s10's......had the bright idea to take my buddies 500foreman and see if it would fit into the back of my short bed. drove up and over the fenderwells hit the brakes they slid down the wells and bam shattered my back glass. Only thing that held it together was the tint but it fell out going down the road.

well I did this stupid act cause I was gonna buy a utility quad cause I sold my motocross bike and I needed something to travel in the woods with and the s10 gets stuck on mildewed grass so i was like well if it fits in the bed i'll go buy a new quad. well i wasn't too happy after i seen how "well" it fit and never bought teh quad. so i borrow dads 4x4 dakota when i go hunting lol.

What about a Baja type spare tire carrier?

Ive been looking for one and cant seem to find it anywhere...but still thats a good way to not only make your meatball stick out, but it will also bring some attention to the bed. Only problem is that you cant store anything back there with the spare tire like that

I'll try to find my pic- but I took a old rotor and welded legs to it and bolted it in the back of the bed to hold a fullsize spare. Sandblasted it and painted it.

Just use your stock spare tire holder, cut a hole in your bed pull the thing through and boom spare tire holder.
