View Full Version : Weird Noise Coming From Heater Vent

So I went through all these threads and didn't find anything that specifically stated the problem i'm experiencing. Though I could have missed something....

Anyway, it's usually when I turn the heat up to the 3 or 4 level, it makes this loud chirping noise almost. If I turn it down to 1 or 2 it will stop. Seems to blow fine but the noise is weird. Doesn't do it all the time but quite a bit and from what I remember, only on those two levels.

Anybody have any ideas or experienced this? Heater core related? I have no experience with it so i'm kinda stumped, thought i'd ask you all.

it sounds like the blower motor may be on its way out. if its on the verge it will still blow fine for a while. then later it will get louder as it gets worse then it will start to get weaker. thats all i can think of right now. oh almost forgot does it do it on heat only or when you run the ac too?

blower motor, huh. Sounds fun...Not sure on the AC i'd have to check. Don't really use it this time of year, haha..

Also only does it when it feels like, so, if I were to go and show somebody, it probably wouldn't do it  Typical of my luck. So it might take time to get that answer for ya!

I'd take changing a blower motor over a heater core any day. It's easy on s10's, whether its got ac or not. It's under the hood, and looks like this.

It's fun to change out the blower motor since it's so close to the fender. Not impossible though. Could be a loose nut since some of the motors use a nut to hold on the squirl cage (don't think 2nd gens do that though.. mine didn't have it but the replacement motor they wanted to give me did). More than likely it's the bearings gettin ready to go.. anyways, the blower motor is about $40-50. Could be some stuff in the the heater box.. I found some business cards in mine when I swapped out the boxes to an a/c delete box.. didn't hear the 'clicking' I did when I got my truck.

Thanks all for the information. Appreciate it. I'm not going to worry too much about it until I start having problems, just wanted to figure out what was going on. It still blows fine and only does the noise thing occassionally, so. I shall wait and see where it goes from here.

I just replaced mine the other day ($29 + tax). I have a 2000 4banger and had to remove the ecm off the coolant recovery tank then the tank and take the bolts out of the inner fender to drop it down enough to remove the motor. Those little bolts are 5.5mm and are trickey to get to also. Mine was doing exactly the same thing then one cold morning at 7 degrees it would not run at all until I opened the hood and hit it real hard. I think it took almost an hour to do though.

If you can get to the 1" hose that ventilates the motor itself, pull it off and spray some silicone lubricans toward the Center bulb on the housing to lube the bearing. This will help keep it going a while longer.
