The GMC Safari and Chevrolet Astro midsize vans will go away after the 2005 model year, General Motors announced recently.
In production since model year 1985, these were the first "minivans" to be offered by GM in response to the introduction of the Dodge Caravan, Plymouth Voyager and Chrysler Town & Country vans by Chrysler Corp. in the early '80s.
The Astro and Safari were practical, but very trucklike and never as stylish as the other minivans on the market. The Astro and Safari stayed in the GM lineup for so long because they were niche vehicles that found a place as smaller commercial vans and as family vans that were somewhat larger than the traditional minivan
