Hi I'm lookin for some advice on some tunes for my truck. I have a panasonic head unit that im going to have installed at best buy. I was wondering if just the cd player with two 6"x9"'s would sound good? I dont want a really loud system just something that sounds clear. Will i need to build box's for the speakers? Any advice would be appreciated.

I have a couple of 6x9's in a box I used to have in my truck. I powered them with a small alpine amp and they sounded really good. They hit hard and have good highs. You need boxes for the speakers.

Why boxes in a nova? Mine took 6x9s in the factory holes in the back dash and used the trunk as a box. I've had people think I had a 10 in the trunk with just them.

Yes you can just buy speaker boxes. I would just go to Best Buy and listen to the ones on display. Buy the one you like best that fits your budget. That's what I did.

I have Polk Audio components in my doors and tweeters in the dash. They are more than enough for my truck. Amazing sound, no distortion. I love them and at this point swear by them. Everybody who hears them is impressed with how clear they sound at all volumes. Fairly priced for what they are, too.
This is what I have:

Here are some 6x9's:

Its a 77 Nova there is no back dash its a flat surface behind the back seat the only speakers in the car are two tiny blown out speakers with a AM radio.

First you will want to break it down by whats powering them. Since its the Pana deck, you will be averaging 25W/RMS. Not 50W they advertise on those things. Any deck power is like that. There are very few exceptions to that.
You want to find speakers that dont require a lot of power. As in their (Power Handleing) 250W RMS speakers sound like a$$ on a 25W RMS deck. So if the deck is what you have, keep them effecient.
I wouldnt pay over $110.00 on a pair of 6x9s for that purpose. Pioneer, Infinity, Sony, RF, Apline and Kenwood I think is all BBuy carries. Sonys suck, Pios and Kenwoods are decent and Alpine and Inf probably sound the best.
As any speaker, there needs to be at least a baffle board for them to be mounted to or a box. Keeping the front and rear soundwaves seperated keeps from high volume distortion and low frequency cancellation.
i just got me 2 (alpine type R) 6X9's and 2 (alpine type R) 4x4's one ten inch clarion sub (no box) 1 600 watt amp and a 350 watt amp all for my 1 gen short cab s-10

Mine was a 78, the 77 musta been a hatchback. Mine had one in the center dash factory. I pulled up the cardboard cover over the back and the holes were there for 6x9s, the cardboard was drilled with sound holes.

I got the panasonic cq-dfx4030u deck with the advertised 50x4watts. Is there a way to make that 100x2? I'm guessing not but i also just ordered some infiniti kappa 693.7i 6x9"s new for $95. Now im trying to decide what kind of box's to get between upright facing the back of the seat, (which would save me some room) or sideways facing up. It's the standard cab so i dont got much room i would eventually like to custom mount them tucked in the bottom of the b-pillars but i'm kind of in a hurry to get some tunes goin. Any ideas on the speaker box's?? :D
ive got a jvc flip down, a 250 watt amp powering my sony xplods in the doors, and ive got 4 tweeters running from the cd player.
and it sounds really clear with the bass all the way down and the treble up.

is your truck an extended cab....or reg cab-if it is an extended cab you can put like one ten inch sub with 150 watts on the sub and nice 6's in the doors and nice 2x4's in the dash i believe

If you're really crafty you can easily sammich a pair of 8's or even a pair of 10's behind the seat. I've seen it done ;) I've even seen a single 12 and amp rack back there that hit like a sledgehammer hehehe.
a lot of what you're lookin for will depend on the type of music you usually listen to and what kinda budget you have to work with, but worry about your listening habbits first as that will help folks here narrow down what to recomend to you as far as equipment goes.
YOu say in your first post that you're looking more for quality of your sound more so than extreme volume so those 6x9's are going to be a good start. As Mitz said though.. make sure you get an amp that will power them correctly or you'll slowly destroy them (as well as them sounding nasty). To accent the 6x9's i would proably do a set of 8's or even a single 10 just to get some of the lower frequency's in there. thE 6X9's will sound decent, but i like that extra lower end to really kick up the drum and electronic bass to fill things out.
Big recomendation - whatever you do... DO NOT SKIMP ON YOUR WIREING. Even the best equipment with cheap wire will sound like poop in a can.
I put a single 12 in the back of my jimmy 1st gen... thread can be found here

The oldest s-10 i've played with was a '89... but should be a 4x6 plate in the dash... thats been a s10 standard AFAIK.

No, you cant bridge the internal amp. Its advertised 50x4 but I can guarantee you that wont happen. The most basic way to tell how much it really is is simple.
Take your formula :
E x I = P
E is Voltage. Measured in Volts
I is Current. Measured in Amps
P is Power. Measued in Watts
We will take the basic number of 12 Volts as pertains to our vehicles and multiply it by the fuse on the back of the deck which is in Amps. If its a 10amp fuse on the back, that is its maximum allowable current input.
12Vx10A = 120W total.
Divide that by 4 spk outputs and its 30W per.
You can add some by the vehicle running and the volts being 13.7 or 14.0 or whatever.
But there is also other factors like OEM wire size and natural wire resistance. This figure would be MAX figure. RMS would be much lower. I guestimate from experience around 18-20W RMS per channel.
