Whinning noise?

There is a whinning noise comin from the engine and dont know what it is. Its not a supercharger(I wish). Sounds like its comin from driver side. Goes away when it warms up or when i get on the gas in drive. It doesnt always happen to. First I thought it was the idler pulley but dont think it is.

alternator maybe? check the bearing in the water pump also by taking the serpentine belt of and wiggling the pulley on the pump around to see if it has any play in it . hope that helps

I know its not the alternator. I have a bad fealing its the water pump but I had to hear it from someone else. Darn and that was off another s10 to. I have more things wrong with this truck that has only 7k on it than my 158k truck. Last time I pay someone 3G's to do an engine swap and paint.
Did I get raped or just sweat talked.

you got a fair deal. but also check the power steering pump. my full size chevy does that. the seals are bad and when it gets kinda low it sound just like a supercharger. as i go faster or the truck warms up the sound goes away. when it gets real low the whining wont stop.

Waterpumps usually dont squeak. They will start to leak out the seep holes when bad tho. Try getting a mech stethescope or use some rubber hose (like old heater hose). Stick the hose or scope on and around the componets (like alt, ps pump, idler pulley, etc) and place your ear on the end to determine where the noise is coming from. Be careful. And of course this is with it running and emitting the noise.

x2 on checkin the pw steering pump and belt tensioner w/ stethoscope, forgot to mention that. i dont wanna disagree with u mik but water pumps when the bearing go bad will whine like hell

yeah, true. But its rare in my experiences. Usually they are leaking B4 that occurs. Ive never had one whine. But dont doubt that it can =)

yeah it does leak out the weep hole first on every 1 ive seen go bad 2, but it can be bad even though its not leakin,but ive not seen it :]

yeah they can squeek but that doesn't mean it's bad......could be on it's way out......only bad ones i've seen leak out the piss hole like already stated.....my brothers water pump on his 350 squeeks but it works fine.....quite annoying so only thing to do is change it.....unless u wanna replace the bearings inside.....lol
