I drive a 1991 with the 4.3, and wanted to know if anybody had put a spacer on a first gen. And of course, if any improvements were made to either power or throttle response and hopefully mileage.

with the tb spacer, you will see a difference in throttle responce and a turbo like whistle

On your TBI engine, you will notice improved throttle response (more low-end torque from lengthening the intake runners), and fuel economy (more consistant air-fuel mixture, from lengthening the intake runners- but only if you stay go easy on the gas!), but you will not have a whistle sound. If you are using the open-element filter you already know what sound to expect, a whooshing of engine vacuum as you give it heavy throttle. The 96+ paperweight spacers seem to have it quite often, though.

The Helix style is only for the newer 96+ eninges. Adding a spacer on a TBI will make an inprovement without the whissle sound.

Helix does make spacers for TBI engines. I imagine they might have the whistle, but I've never heard of anyone using one. The CFM-Tech TBI spacer is the best design.

I've seen at least two brands marketing the helix style spacer for the 1991 model year but would actually prefer the straight one. I've also seen the one marketed by CFM but my mechanic bench tested it and said it wasn't all that great. Especially once you get above idling RPM's
I have heard good things about Powerdyne's spacer. I know a couple of folks that said it got them better results than what the PowerAid spaced did for them and it doesn't have any of the associated "noise" with it. Here's a link to Jeg's site:

I run the Powerdyne on a 96+ dry intake. It actually with its tapers improved the throttle response some. I think it actually increased the velocity of the air entering. I tried all the others years ago and saw absolutely nothing and got this Powerdyne one to try out since it was free and it seemed to help just a small amount, little less than a EGR restrictor so I never took this freebie out and Ebayed her for a profit!
I installed my Powerdyne spacer on my 02 truck in November of 02, I took it off of my truck in december of 04, Just messing around with a few things-taking everything off cause i was thinking of selling my truck. Anyways, Since i had it on my truck for so long it threw a SES light. After I got done "polishing" things up on everything. I reinstalled it and 23 miles later my SES light went out. I guess my Engine "got use" to the spacer.

should have gave 'er a reset...see if it cleared it up for you and let the truck re-learn it

Hey Blazer69 what type or brand did you purchase?

His is a CSFI engine anyhow. I've yet to try the Powerdyne spacer for the TBI engine, but I've heard nothing but good things about them for the 96+ engines. Might be worth looking in to.
I use the CFM-Tech, and prefer it due to the design of the Edelbrock manifold I have. It has the two intake bores joined, but with a flat face between them about 1" down. The spacer has the nice machined 'ramp' which helps ease the airflow between them and around that flat face.

I drive in a polution controlled state (California) and the CFM-Tech spacer is not smog legal.
Or, at least it wasn't the last time I checked, although, I talked to the Air Resources Board and they said that all they do with any aftermarket parts is determine wether or not it would interfere with emissions sensors or stock polution controls.

Strange...it doesn't interfere with any of the emissions controls. All it does is raise the TBI by 1". I passed the sniffer check with it (along with many other mods, including a non-emissions legal cam) installed.

Most mods for our trucks are going to pass the sniffer even if thier not emissions legal. It might hurt emissions but just because you put it on doesn't mean your going to fail.

I have a tb spacer on the lil' 2001. All it does it whistle.... lol.... As for horsepower gains.... hmm... still thinking about that. I'm spoiled though. When you can spray a 75 shot or a 100 then everything else is obsolete. Well until I get the LT-1.
