View Full Version : 160degree Stat on a 2001 Blazer Xtreme, will it pop a engine lite?

I was going to do a coolant flush, and t-stat on the blazer, I was wondering if I go with a 160 stat if it would throw a check engine lite code?
I currently run no stat in my S-10 And have no light errors but I was wondering if the newer OBD2 Set-up would throw a code.
I plan on a programmer in the future that would require the cooler T-stat.
Can anyone chime in on this?

yes it will if the engine runs at that low of a temperature. the lowest the computer will allow is 170. i run a 160 in mine in the summer but the operating temp. stays at about 180 due to the summer heat.

On a cold day, we are talkin less than 40* weather, a 180 t-stat will throw a code.

that be the reason i put my stocker back in for the winter. gets in the single digits here sometimes.

I've had a 170 t-stat for several years with temps in the single digits and never had a code. However I just put the stock one back in mine this winter because it gets better fuel mileage. The heater works better too. I've been told not to go less than 170 though on an OBDII. If you use the 160 in the summer and change back to stock in the winter you shouldn't have any problems though because your truck will run hotter than 160 in the summer.

I just seen you're from Florida. You can probably run the 160 year round.

I agree 100%...but why don't you just run a 170 like bespurcell?
High was 18*F here yesterday.
You can be your ass I took out the 180*.
Believe the SES light will only come on at 132*f or lower, According to the SM

Thanks for the input guys!
Ok Well I was just plannin on going to take the stocker and drill some holes in it to allow some by pass.... I was wondering if someone can tell me why the 01 Blazer T-stat looks differ compared to your typical chevy Tstat like in my S-10 Looks nearly identicle except it is about 1/2 inch longer has a lil disc @ the bottom w/ a smaller spring? I ask this b/c I have a 160 Stat layin around from my Formula which is the same as the one for my S-10 as well and was planning on using that one, I was guessing possibly it was 2 T-stats in 1 possibly for another coolant route deeper in the intake

Bad idea. A hole as small as 3/32" will make for extremely long warm-ups hurting mileage and driveability. Low temp t-stats and todays stock programs just don't get along very well.
Do you get a hp increase? Yes, at the expense of fuel mileage.
The spring loaded disc shuts of the bypass when the t-stat opens. Used to just have a small hole below the RH water pump bolt for bypass but even warmed up, you still had coolant bypassing the radiator.

You stated this in an earlier post.
I think that is what he is talking about.

would I still be safe using my older style T stat?

No, the bypass (as in hot water bypassing the radiator) needs to be shut off after warm-up.
