View Full Version : On the 4.5...

On the 4.5L engine that was suppose to be made. If I took a 4.3L engine to try to make it.

Would the block have to be bigger or would the 4.3L block have enough to do work to it?
Would I need to just put bigger pistons after I'd bore it to make 4.5L or I need to put a different crankshaft to stroke it to make 4.5L?

I imagine there is more than these 2 things. Unless the heads on the 4.3L would work on the 4.5L. Also probably bigger injectors and fuel pump; along with computer.

I know just putting V8 would make more sense, but I would just like to know some info if any has any about 4.5L engine.

Thanks

Bore x stroke. Figure it out. A 4.3 is the same as a 350 with the exception of 2 less cylinders. You take a 400 crank in a 350 bored .030 and you get a 383. A 350 bored .030 is a 355. A 400 (larger bore than a 350) and a 350 crank is a 377.
Usually a .030 overbore is std on a rebuild of a milage motor, a .060 is safe and a .090 is pushing it =)
Im too tired right now to do any math.

Oh yea!
BTW a .060over 4.3 is a 4.4 thats about all I know in regard to a 4.5l

Probably a typo

So if you bored your 4.3 .60 over and stroked it you could make a 4.5 couldnt you?

To make a 4.5L you gotta get to around 275ci you'd have to go .040 over and get the crap crank from speed-o-motive which is a 3.55". If you really want to do it right you'd have to get a billet crank and then get up to 3.75 or if you wanna mess with exspensive pistons maybe up 3.8" or 3.9". You could actually get up to about a 5.0L. 3.9" stroke and 4.060 bore gives you 302ci or 5.0L. I have aspirations of going .030 over and putting in maybe a 3.6"-3.7" crank. This will be one of the later stages on the blower build.

What is the bore and stroke of the stock 4.3L?

Somewhere around 4.0(bore) and 3.5(stroke)?

You can buy a WorldProducts 454 SBC or a 427 or a 415. Part of their Motown casitng line. Also have shortblocks or partial built engines. Alum or Iron. http://www.worldcastings.com/:D Sweeeeet! Is it me or does just the mention of 4 2 7 get your blood pumpin?

that adds up to 263ci so thats close

gm used to make the parts to bore and stroke the 4.3 block to make a 5.0 or better v6 and at one time you could even get the splayed valve heads like the ones on the 454 and other big blocks. not sure if those parts are still available though.

Same as a 350ci 4.0" bore and a 3.48" stroke.

That was/is all Bow Tie racing stuff. IDK how much of it is still available but I think you can get the blocks from Summit. Mucho caro.

Actually the mustang is a 4.9 if you look at it but i guess they felt 5.0 sounded cooler.

Mikz86TA
01-11-08, 01:52 PM
Yup. a 302 is indeed a 4.9 but close enough they lied to us =)
Isnt the LS1 actually a 5.6 and not a 5.7?

boxcarracer963
01-11-08, 02:22 PM
isnt a ls1 350 cubic inches?
all you have to do is go on google and search any amount of cubich inches and it will tell you how many liters that is.

I used to have a 4.5 in both of my 1969 dodge darts!
They both came with it factory.
I agree a 5.0L v6 in our trucks would be awesome! Just to think of the torque and power.... Building one up just to see what is would do would be awesome!

I actually think the ls1 it like 346 cid. I could be wrong...
The 5.slow mousetangs were actually 4900 cc not exactally 4900cc a lil more but i dont know the exact number but to be cool they just bumped it up a lil.
The chevy 307 and 305 were more of a 5.0 than the mousetang motor was.

firefighter
01-11-08, 09:43 PM
An LS1 is actually 346ci like Josh said. And 305 is just over 5000cc. And like I said a 5.0 V6 in the Dimes would be hot. I would really dig one of the all Aluminum Bowtie blocks with some Brodix heads and my S/C....... :wackit:

White-V-6-S-Ten
01-11-08, 11:23 PM
Hell yea that would be great!
Any idea on what that would cost to turn the 4.3 into a 5.0?

If you have to ask.....

firefighter
01-12-08, 01:50 PM
You'd definatley be looking at a billet crank about $2K for the rotating assembly, and you'd have to get a Bow Tie block $2k in iron and $4K in aluminum. If you are gonna do something like that you'd have to get the Brodix heads about another $2K. So doing quick math $6K-$8K before you even start talking about valvetrain, cam, gaskets, etc. you gotta figure about $8K-$10K before you worry about induction.

A person used o be able to get a bowtie block and all the parts from gm to build a 311ci v6. Bore of 4.125 and stroke of 3.875 but I dont know if you can get the parts anymore.

firefighter
01-12-08, 05:10 PM
You can get the blocks the crank will be custom the heads it's either stock or Brodix.

This is what I was looking for. This will tell more of what is done. Not cheap I am sure.
