Alright guys..and girls..need some opinions and done-it-yourself experience here..
Waterpump is leaking out the ceep hole..not just crustys forming, its leaking...drip by drip...2005 GMC Jimmy 4x4, 136,000Kms. Waterpump for me isnt a big deal...if I can rebuild combine and tractor engines, I can do a waterpump..
What I want to know is what you think or what you have found to be the most effective way to completely drain the system of its Dexcool. I gotta drain the coolant anyways, and I want to get rid of the crap Dexcool, and refill the system with some good aftermarket coolant...prolly just the industrial stuff we run in the tractors at work..
Lets hear it..
Thanks,
Jay

flush it like 50 times either that or get it done at the dealer/rad shop they got a pressure gimmick to get it done. Personally I don't have a problem with Dexcool just keep the system in good shape and remember it's extended use not infinite use. I've rub it in both Blazers the Imp's and the Silvy w/o probs. Pushing 10 years in various vehicles no issues.

Backflushing is going to be the most effective.
Without that heres how I do it : I drain, fill with water and run with heater on until to op temp for 5-10 min, drain, do same a 2nd time, drain, fill again and add a cleaner like Prestone makes and do the same heatup procedure. I forgot to add I leave the thermostat out. I use distilled water and antifreeze and redline water wetter. 1gal water, wetter rest with af and top off with water if needed.
I still had some floating debris about 6months later but since have done a 2nd flush after replacing hoses and I no longer see the floaters.

What's wrong or not as good about Dexcool? I have that in all my vehicles...I was under the assumption that it was the best.

hm I was reading the info in that link. Should I be considering ditching the dex-cool?? I also thought it was one of the better coolants.....

FYI. BeCool I think it is makes a anode petcock to replace an OEM petcock to attract the bad things that cause corrosion. Also GM states that running it low and leaving it in too long causes the issues. Low means more air entered into the system and thus causes a reaction. Too long....What! you mean its NOT 100K mile antifreeze? Like those 100K plugs. PPfffttt....BS on that too

i just got a 5 gallon bucket with a hole and a fitting for a radiator hose on the bottom. temporaraly afix the bucket to the hood(so its higher than the radiator) Fill the bucket with the water mix and then you connect the hose on the bucket to the top inlet of the radiator. then extend the hose coming out of the intake manifold to a empty bucket on the ground. start the engine and once the thermostat opens the waist coolant will pour into the bucket on the ground at the same time the new mixture will flow into the radiator. this will flush the whole system out.

all the brown craps that forms is because people mix regular green coolant with the red dexcool..and it isnt suppose to be mixed because it does cause the muddy brown...just dont mix and dexcool is fine

But doesnt some say that is mix's with all colors?

after my heater core crapped out i switched to the green coolant....have read alot of articles about dex-cool clogging up heater cores......they use a pump system at the shops....isn't that expensive of a tool....otherwise just flush the system with a garden hose....

Yes. This is what I put in my truck just in case I didn't get all the dexcool flushed out, I wouldn,t have to worry about the two being incompatible with each other.

I am not sure but I think the dexcool I put in mine might say you can mix with all colors. I am going to check a little later and see.

if u do the garden hose flush just keep flushing it till all water comes out....thats what i did before switching over to green and have never had any issues....

I think I'll try that next time. Last time I filled up with water twice, ran, and drained.

ok as u have seen before i did replace my water pump, but i did not purge the system...thats my question here, what does that mean by purging the system? making sure there is no air pockets in the system? and how do u do this procedure? i did notice that after i got my truck back running again my heat is no working so well, i do not have a fan on it at the moment but the temp. here are so low it doesnt even get to 190 degrees, i also have a 160 stat in my truck as well and i never had any prblems the previous winter when i had it in

the problem is your heater core is the one part of the system that is at the highest location with no easy way to fill/purge it.
#1)1st off FILL your overflow tank to absolutely FULL when you get home and put the car away for the night. When the engine and system cools down it'll pull a vacuum and cause A/F to flow into system from the overflow tank. It may take a couple of days. AIR and DEXCOOL DO NOT MIX!
#2)You could also put your truck on ramps(front end).
With the engine running and Lever Cap run to op temp.
Pull Lever and squeeze upper rad hose hard, drop lever. This will help expel excess air from system. Do this a few times. (Go back to #1)
#3) Get rid of the 160* thermostat. It's too cold for this engine. A 180 is the minimum you should run. UNLESS you have a programmer/programmed computer with a requirement for 160. I noticed a 30* drop in heat output on my 2002 just by going from a 195 to a 180. My center outlet temps went from 140* to 110*. The heater core is not clogged.

Dexcool aint all that bad
Basically..
Have you radiator flushed and refilled according to Chevy specs.
Dont mix it with any other color ( it will SLUDGE).
Problem with Dexcool is people let it go for way too long, its extended use, not lifetime, after a certain amount of time, Dexcool will age and turn very acidic, eating away at seals, gaskets, inside of hoses, Etc. Just keep up on your suggested maintainence and youll be fine

Or put Dexcool back in or it will sludge. Thats what Dexcool does. SLUDGE!
