View Full Version : Ordered a Gtech!

I just ordered a Gtech pro SS performance meter... the RR was too expensive for features I didn't need. So I payed $189 for a new in box SS with free shiping off EBay.

A buddy of mine bought one of the original Gtech meters with the blue backlite screen. He said it worked flawless, consitant with Sears Point track times. And the newer Gtechs' with the orange backlite are said to be better. So I can answer the golden question I get asked hundreds of times "So how much rear wheel horsepower you runnin'?"

I'm not sure why guys keep asking me this, it's a 200 horse v6 with way too many bolt on's..so I answer 180ish RW horse. Like it's an impressive number... :yawn_125:

But it will be nice to see what little I do to the V6 from here on out affect 1/4mile and hp/tq.

Whatever the accuracy may or may not be, it will be nice to see changes in output from bolt-ons and weather.

wow really? i figure it would need wired into the PCM or something to get info such as RPM's, speedometer, etc. etc.

My brother-in-law has one of the old g-tech's. I borrowed it but found it to be a pain in the butt to get set up. It had to be suction cupped to the window perfectly level which was hard to do since the ground my truck was sitting on wasn't level. The controls were not user friendly at all. After about 45 minutes I just gave up. I'm sure they have improved these troubles on the newer ones so I'm interested in how you like yours.

Yeah...it had a switch you put to the left or right and also pushed in. Kinda a cheapo way to do it.
The new ones are alot nicer =)
Basically its a timer, accelerometer and a g-calibration thingy. I forget the name of the device that converts g-force to info. The professional ones are called Vericom VC-200A which automotive magazines use to test with as do others. They are expensive and big. But they work the same. I believe are more accurate too. I almost bought one off E-bay once, but was outbid...by alot. Started out like $75. Which I wouldve gladly paid.

oh and read the manual good cuz in it ,it will tell u that ur hp/tq figures will be lower than what a dyno would be becuz of wind resistance and the incline/decline of the surfaces ur running on.

It arrived! Pretty cool, I hard mounted it to the pillar and hard wired it into a switched ignition source on the fuse panel.

I haven't had a change to find a scale to weight my truck (& me) But I'll set it all up soon.

any results yet?

Not yet, I just found a Livestock Feed Supply in my town that has a truck scale on the property and they charge a $1 to weight. I'll go over there after work today and get the accurate weight of my truck in all it's glory. However, I haven't been able to break .5g's on accel, I max out around .47g's

But only after the photoshoot around town with the new cowl hood :D

What happened with you rear end?

What happened with you rear end?

The shop wouldn't warranty (I supplied ring & pinion, carrier & pinions bearings + seal ordered from Summit) because the pinion nut threads weren't properly pinched or staked from the manufacturer.

Summit won't warranty the parts because "The mechanic never should of installed faulty parts" and instead, becasue the pinion nut was faulty they just shipped me a new pinion nut only. And in the meantime lost a loyal and high dollar customer.

So we put in a new pinion seal, tightened the nut back up to spec. Red Loctite and staked all 6 points on the nut. And new 75-90 gear oil... so far so good, the gears are a tad noisier than before, but probably because they need to develop a new wear pattern.

So everyone is pointing the finger and wont pay up. So you gat the shaft, Damn that sucks! Politics are a *****!

Im sorry man. That sux! Nothing like a good finger pointing session to make your blood boil.
Its hard to tell. Most shops reuse the old nut many times. My orig 1986 nut was reused on the TA when I did the gear/carrier swap way back when. Its never loosened to this day. Maybe the Orig nut GM made kept its consistensy, maybe the guy I had do it checked it. IDK. I was there and dont recall that specifically. I do know he reused the same one tho.
Its a partial fault of both IMO. But unfortunately youre the one taking the a$$-end of the situation.

This is half a tank of gas, no driver and my old hood in the bed... so I just added my weight to it and set the Gtech at 4580lbs. Still haven't done a 1/4mile run yet though.

Stock advertised curb weight is 4,439lbs. At least I'm lighter than stock :P

In the grand scheme of things it ain't that heavy when I got my Gtech and weighed the Blazer it came in at 3800lbs w/o me.

So what about the new toy now that you have your weight what else do you need to start playing with it and getting some stats?
I feel like a kid in a candy store!
I might get one for myself.

I put your data into several calculators and came up with about 220 hp...
I would run her at the track and see how accurate trap speed and 1/4 mile distance are....
