I just bought a JVC KD-HDR1, wired it up (correctly might I add), and put it into my 98 Jimmy. My problem is there is no sound going to my amp for the subs. This is my first install, and before I had my subs getting the sound via line-level input. To my knowledge there is no switch on the stereo, or the amp, so is there something I need to enable in the stereo? I'm clueless. Thanks
Dan
Did you check to see if the amp turns on? You need power, ground, and turn-on lead (head unit to the amp) for an amp to work. Then RCA's from the head unit to the amp.

yup, all those are hooked up and working, and the RCA's are plugged in. The amp actually still works with the line-level input, which I just reverted back to when things werent working.
Can you explain what you mean by line level input and how its hooked up? Maybe you call what im thinking a different name. I only really hear line level input when it comes to a home stereo.

line level = speaker wires hooked directly into the amp, NOT using a signal directly from the stereo headunit. I simply extended the wires from my rear door speakers to the amp. Hope that helps.

Ok....so your rear speakers are your subs then? BTW, what kind of amp, subs, speakers?

its a sonly xplod amp, sorry I forget the model number, I know it has a 1000w peak, pushing 2 10" rockford fosgate p1's
should have put that in the first post. I have run speaker wire from my rear door speakers to the left and right input on the amp (the amp has both traditional RCA and "line-level" inputs".

No. His rear speakers aren't his subs. He's using the signal going to his rear speakers as an input on his amp. The subs are hooked up to the output on the amp.

ha ha thanks, i was having trouble describing it. my amp is similar to this one:

Im still kinda confused to how you wired it up, and im an installer. lol Sorry.
So the subs dont work from what I read in the first post. If you wanted to power the subs from the amp....speaker wires must run from the amp to the subs. And I guess youre powering speakers off the amp too? Other than what I said in my first post.....the only thing I could think of that could be the problem is 1. bad connections (RCA's or speaker wires) 2. RCA's are bad (if theyre cheap RCA's and they get pinched...might as well thrown them away) 3. blown subs (doubt it since you just replaced the head unit).
I tried helping. If anything....im sure Mikz will help you on here.

ha ha, thanks for trying to help, I do have cheap RCA's, I guess I need to check those again. I'm thinking the ones in the back of the radio are the culprits. maybe I'll just go to the store tommorow and buy new ones, I need a better install kit anyway. Thanks again, and If anyone has anymore input I would greatly appreciate it!
Dan
Nevermind. I understand now....I never installed that kind of amp before. No wonder you dont even need a turn on lead for it to work. I always ran RCA's from the head unit to the amp. Or unless I installed a signal processor.

His subs work wired up the way he described. They just don't work when he tries to use the RCA outs from his head unit to supply the signal to his amp. Does your head unit have an adjustable output on the rca outs? I have an alpine head unit and it has rca outs just for the subs and you can control the level from the head unit seperate from the speaker outs.

HMMMMM I will have to consult my manual here, I know it has a function to control how high the frequencies are going to my subs, I have it set at 125hz right now. Crossover I believe its called. I will see if there is a gain function on the preamp out for the subs. good idea.

thought so, i own a JVC KD-LH 810 and love the deck and it has the 4 volt sub-out....but ya with ur problem with ur stereo i was thinking it was maybe a remote wire not hooked up but u guys went over that, hmmmm....i have done my fair share of installs as well and i dont do it for a living either

well, no dice on that, all I can do is set it to send frequencies lower than 90hz, 135hz, and 180hz, So I guess I am back to my cheap RCA's as the culprit. I wont be fixing those till tommorow though.

I would definitely try different rca cables first. If it's not what I mentioned earlier. Hopefully Mike will be along soon.

Are your your lines comming out of the deck sub out or sterio? If its a sub out check to see if the line on the deck is turned on. Sometimes its turned to low -14 or so decibles(look for SW setting). Oh is there power going to amp?
Take a AAA battery and two leads goin from + and the - side of battery and tap the rca plug, one wire goin to the nipple and one goin to the circle ring around the nipple. If the subs hit then its not your wires or amp.(turn the bass way down so not to blow subs)It imatates an audio signal.

Well, yesterday after work I tore into it again, and found that one wire had come loose at the RCA end, and the other RCA cable was pinched by my rear seat bracket when I folded the seat back up, which pretty much cut it, I just didn't notice, as I was only looking at the RCA ends. Everything is working fine now, thanks for all the replies!
