not really... just wastin' ammo and blowing up beer bottles and punching holes in the old beer keg.
I only fired 12 rounds Friday from my Mossberg 500a 22" barrel....
but in the short amount of time my arm was getting a little sore... it was also warm enough, I didnt have much clothing to act as a cushion.
I decided to go burn up some ammo for the hell of it seeing as how its my last chance with my shotgun before I leave for Afghanistan. between me and my brother, we shot up a bunch up beer bottles, a couple pieces of wood, an old keg now has 3 new 3/4" holes, and a couple of water filled pop bottles have been obliterated.
the plastic bucket that was supposed to carry all the carnage was takin' aim at courtesy of my brother.... has an entrance hole (perfectly round) and a nice large exit hole with plenty of cracks... idiot...
I cant get pics right now of anything, they're on my brothers camera still.
was fun while it lasted... but maybe next time I'll wear my thicker military jacket instead of the thin one
Sounds like fun.
As for the recoil, its just something you have to get used to.
In High school, I shot a lot of trap and skeet. 250+ rds every saturday morning. Didn't hurt too bad, but now that I don't shoot that much 12 GA, I feel every 25 rd box the next morning.
It also helps to take an asprin beforehand. Learned that trick from a fellow who shot a 338 Lapua Mag every day of a weeklong match. Really helped out, cause that weekend I had to use a 300 win mag target rifle cause my 308 went tits up. . .

well, that may help with shoulder pain... but I had my own ear plugs for once... so no head ache.
I still remember that time my father did the trap shooting... firing 150+ rounds a day... the one day his shoulder was bloody from firing that much.
oh well...

lol 2 3/4" shells aren't that bad for shooting alot. If your gun kicks alot get a bigger recoil pad or a weight put in the stock. Slacker come down sometime and get into some flocks of dove during season. We've emptied out 500rnds in 2hrs...got our dove limit but then we got bored and started shooting dragon flies lol.

theres no recoil pad for my shotguns... my thick jacket, thats about it. for shootin' in the air... I think i'd try gettin' use to under the arm shooting

i have a 500 but i have the stock 28" barrel....can't imagine how much it would kick with a shorter one

just make sure you're holding the gun correctly in your shoulder pocket. The gun shouldnt be on your arm as you noted. the gun should never 'punch' you eithor. Make sure you have a good solid shoulder pocket position and it should 'push' your whole body. worst case you'll have some mild bruising from repeated shooting (many many rounds) but not much else.
I do a lot of skeet in the summer times and its not uncommon for me to go thru 250-300 rounds in a couple hours... along with a couple hours of .30 cal rifle time (i shoot a .30-06) and the ONLY time i come away sore or overly bruised up is because of my error on butt placement. ANd this is coming from several guns in the course of an afternoon - all friends/family so we pass them around to get the varience thing covered. Main point being gun weight - based on barrel length anyway - doesnt play TOO much of a factor when you're discussing 12 gauge rounds.
i will qualify this as yes.. i've been shooting a 12 gauge since i was 10 years old, i bought my .30-06 at 13 (the guy at the store tried to talk me into a .270 and i embarassed him pretty badly... but thats another story heheh!) the point being.. its about practice... you have to develope a 'muscle memory' for the right placement of the gun so you dont HAVE to think about making sure its right.. Time on track man and you'll get it.

kinda like my placement of my M-16 or M4 and even the 9mm Beretta... I gotcha

my mini 12 wont say how long the barrel is cause i could be arrested and sent to jail with bubba kicks less than it did when it had the 26" barrel on it. Its alot louder but recoil reduced down and it has no recoil pad. I had a mossberg 500 full sythenic, car-15 rear stock real light weight and it hardly kicked. all i can say roger if your complainin about a 12gauge kicking and bruising you so bad down gauge to a 16 or a 20. nothin wrong with a good ol 20gauge.

nothin wrong with my good old military issue either... they have buffer springs and could fire those all day... no matter how much ammo you give me. I dont mind the shotgun when I hunt with it in the woods because you get to only squeeze off 3 rounds at most then you hunt the deer down and dont usually fire until another 10mins or longer. (of course I like to hit trees instead of deer this year)

lol i fired twice at 2 nice 10pointers with my .270. missed them both to a faulty bushnell scope now i got my simmons on there and the day before closing season i bagged a decent 7 pointer but eh.....for a .270 really it kicks as bad as my buddies .300 win mag no joke its small and has the short 22" medium bull barrel.

the day I missed some nice sized Doe and one good sized buck... I shot the F-n trees (blasted through one and the 2nd one caught it)
I still think that F-n buck ducked that slug... bastard

Sounds like a case of Buck Fever to me - both of ya'll :P
I've seen em duck arrows (or jump over them) but never a bullet heheheh
12 deer, 12 shots outa the .30-06. 11 bucks 1 doe. Not bad for 16 years of huntin. Only 2 of em made it more than the 2.5' straight down :P
and for you folks who've expierenced running deer .. i'll just say.. Neck shots ppl... they fall like a sack of 'taters. beautiful thing when they're dead before they hit the ground :D
