I've been looking into electric fans lately as I shattered my lower fan shroud and cracked a blade on my clutch fan on my last dyno run. I'd like to get opinions on the different options that are available. I'll probably need to cool a max of ~300 crank HP (optimistic but we'll go with that anyway :p) and I want it to be a reliable, clean looking install that I can do myself.

these are the options that seem appropriate for my needs -

Ford taurus 2-speed fan - huge CFM, high amp draw, reasonably priced. They seem to go for about $75 without any of the electrical bits needed to hook them up. I should be able to find one locally, if not factor in $30-40 for shipping.

LS1 dual fans - great CFM, reasonable power requirements, expensive! I've bid on half a dozen on ebay over the last 6 months and rarely see them go for less than $100 and it'll cost me an extra $30-50 to get one shipped to me plus the electricals to hook it up. locally is a joke - $300+ from a camaro-T/A specific wrecking yard
http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=290196674324&_trksid=p3907.m32&_trkparms=tab%3DWatching

Flexalite flx-180 - decent CFM, brand new, comes with a clean looking shroud and all the hardware need to hook it up, even more expensive! I can get one locally for $270.

Oddly enough the flexalite specifically made for the S10 costs more and flows less CFM...

You can probably tell that i'm leaning toward the last option but I can be convinced otherwise. I like the idea of a new, warrantied system that comes with all the right parts to hook it up.

Is ~$200 total sort of the standard cost of this mod? I'm an electrical rookie - how much will the relays, fuses, wiring etc cost to hook up a taurus or LS1 fan? there's a harness for sale on the other forum right now for $100 but that seems high to me.

thanks for the input!

I run an FLX-210 fits inside the rad core almost exactly.

http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=FLX%2D210&N=700+4294838842+4294891681+4294901060+4294792709+ 4294902503+115&autoview=sku

I ran it on my '91 Brick and then recently put it on the Blazer X. On the Brick I ran through the core straps with no problem on the X I made a custom shroud out of aluminum. It comes with the old style capilary controler it worked good but was tough on the battery the new VSC controller is very nice.

I also run a FLX-210. The CFM isn't as good at the 180 or 60 per AMP, but I liked the fact that it was very thin (almost half the depth of the 180) and still had good flow. I would get the FLX-210 that doesn't come with a controller (ie FLX-220) and buy FlexaLites VSC controller instead.

It works great and is much easier on the electric system. I ran the controller that comes with the FLX-210 kit and I kept blowing fuses. It's more expensive that way, but MUCH better setup than the FLX-210 kit in my opinion.

I will once it warms up, as far as installing the FLX210/220.. I also have that taurus fan (> Early to Mid 90s Ford Taurus electric fan. 3000 cfm+ flow. $45 plus s&h.) IDK what shipping would be to Canada.. but everything would be in USD.. good thing the USD is less than the CAD now.. haha

I used the top of my shroud & cut off the fan cover. It now just holds the radiator & the lower 1/2 of the shroud is gone. I'm trying to get the engine bay prepped for the elec fan install. I ran the wires, relay & breaker.. when it's above 35 I'll screw in the thremoswitch.. it's supposed to top at at 1 this wknd.. that's right.. ONE. Woohoo heat wave!!

I need to take pics, I over built the schizz outta mine some square tube and the top has a piece of rectangular tube I custom built the holders for the cushions up top and a aluminum sheet for the shroud/cover there is NO load on any of the tubes. I also got the LAST oversized rad from JTR they weren't sure if they were gonna get another run made. The truck barely hit 200* in the FL sun.

I got my ls1 dual fan for 75 bucks here in Tampa locally.
I can call the guy and see if he has anymore?
Interested?
It would be my cost plush shipping.
Then you need the relays and to modify the fan and install it.
Mine is still sitting in my closet i havent done much lately.
I actually just put that k&n filter in the truck you send me Tyson.

Here is a pic of my FLX-210 install. It's not pretty, but it works real well. You can also see the controller here. It's hard to see, but there is a LOT of space now between the fan and the engine. I plan on using that space to re-route my upper coolant hose to make more space for my supercharger. I used the original fan shroud to hold the new fan in place. I cut off all the extra on the lower half of the shroud, and will eventually do the same to the top half to clear out even more space. I'll leave a little on it, I like mounting the E-Fan controls and fuse right there, makes it easy to get to to adjust.

I squirted some dielectric grease/silicone stuff from the plug wire kit in the connections so they wouldn't get oxidation.. I also used shrink tubing to seal up the connectors, since everything is under the hood but still can get wet/condensation.

thanks for the info guys, very useful. is it safe to say that the electrical stuff/controller to hook up the taurus/LS1 fan is going to be ~$100? I think if it's going to cost $200+ to get one of those setups running I'd sooner spend the extra $75-100 for a new kit.

it's good to know that you florida/virginia guys aren't having any cooling problems with 2500cfm fans, I'll likely never see more than a few days of that kind of heat here. I'm going to price the FLX220 and VSC controller locally and as soon as the next pay cheque comes in I'll make up my mind. Thanks for the offer on the LS1 fans Josh, I'll get back to you if I change my mind and decide to go that route.

You will need 3 of these i beleive from what some guys on sseriesforum said when i asked about the fan and hooking it up there.
You will need to change the wires to a larger guage i think its 12 guage but its 5 relays for 8 bucks!
Thats really all you should need plus more wire to hook it up.
Anyone else know a lil more just chime in!

You really would only need 2 if its a 2 speed fan.
Im unsure about the exact nature of these fans. Is there a controller built in? Or are the wires (+ and -) coming off each fan what you are wiring to?

Summit has a controller rated to 30amps.. if the LS1 fans are less than that you could get the summit kit for about $45+s&h.

I'm going to run the summit fan kit w/ the FLX210/220.. since it only pulls 19.5amps. Here's the link to the fan kit.. http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=SUM%2D890016&N=700+0&autoview=sku (http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=SUM%2D890016&N=700+0&autoview=sku)

Sounds like a pretty easy hook up!
My ls1 fan is a dual fan And are single speed. Do you guys know if one is supposed to run all the time unless the rad temp isnt ever set temp?
And and when the ac comes on then they both come on no matter what?

I just picked up an FLX220 for $100 on flea-bay

http://i14.ebayimg.com/08/i/000/d3/5e/a54f_1.JPG

I'm going to get the VSC controller locally and fab up a piece of sheet metal to hold the rad in like I've seen on some of your trucks. Thanks again for the advice everyone!

That's what I don't like about the parts of interest thread. I was bidding on a zexel and it got posted here. Needless to say I got sniped.

Its cool I think I'm gonna get 2 of the 10 inch permacools and run a dual fan. The controller I got from hayden has a 2nd fan option so I just as well.
