View Full Version : Is this from the engine?

In second and third gear, between 1500 and 2000 rpm, the steering wheel starts vibrating. After 2000rpm it stops. In first, fourth, and fifth it doesn't do it. Is this leading to be something wrong with the engine and/or the steering?
The truck hasn't been driven very often as of late. So would this vibrating of the steering wheel be from not driving it?

thanks

no its more likely a tire issue, rotate the front to the rear and see if it still does it. if its shaking the ass now, you know its a tire if not then i would get the front end checked out.

Shouldnt that happen in any gear then? Dont have an answer for you but I would kick it into neutral when its happening and take the tranny/engine out of the equation

yeah i reread the question, it would be real hard to diag with out seeing it. i would still check the easy stuff before jumping to the trans shop or something.

same thing happened drivin the camaro..it started out gradually. The first time it was the u-joints. The second re-accuring time this happened i started to feel a slight vibration in my shifter...thought it was just the rough roads here in missouri....then i started feelin it in the steering wheel, next thing i knew *kaboom* the drivers side tire explodes and litterly ripped the front fender off....sending me into on coming traffic looking at a new gmc suv. Luckly i got back in the other lane and got on the shoulder. Dunno why it really happened they were good tires Goodyear eagle GTII's with 75" tread left. well the tire didn't explode the top layer of the tread just shredded off leaving the tire looking like a bald donut

i should prolly check the u-joints in the s-10 then...it only does it after i go muddin though...with the tires spinnin constantly. if you read the last of csl's post where it says bald donut...and think about the donut as in desert...bald donut sounds funny. if you think of it as a tire...its not, but read it thinkin donut as in a real fryed donut...its hilarious.

Those tires suck..no offence I have them on my ford. I dont trust them at all...went though 3 in the last year and a half. Badly mad batch or sumn.

Oh BTW it could be your steering box or the bushing in the control arm. Have someong sit in your truck with the steering colum unlocked and have them turn left to right fast and hard(to pun intended) and see if there is any play...bushings,arms,geerbox,rag joint.hub etc. Seems like 1 wont feel much vibration because of heavy torq in low gearing and 4 and 5 beacause of speed issue(tends to smoth out at high speeds).
I got the same darn problem, it was the upper control arm and the steering box. Idoit machanich used one off a truck with front end dammage(idiot) lol.

I had a vibration in the steering wheel when i first got my truck. The rotors were warped so when braking it did it.
I still have some slop in the wheel that i cant seem to figure out what it is and drives me nutts!

I already had the truck aligned and bought new tires before it was sitting.

are they a soft "soft" compound tire like a W, Z, or V rated In the morning when my truck has sat overnight especially when it's a lil cold it'll shake like that for a few miles till the tires warm up they get temporary flat spots.

TRY NITROGEN IN THE TIRES...THE PRESSURE WILL NOT FLUCTUATE LIKE AIR!:D

Does the shifter vibrate or shake @ the same time???

Note the speed from 1500-2000 in both gears, there should be some overlap. Take the lowest and the highest speeds and do the following.

Get up to 5mph/500rpm over the highest noted speed/rpm. Let her coast IN NEUTRAL until 5mph500rpm BELOW the lowest. DO NOT REV THE ENGINE.

If the vibration or shaking is there, get your front end checked including the tires for cupping, out of round, or out of balance, misalignment.

If the vibration is NOT there, then do a gear by gear slowdown as above except let the engine slow you down. Note if/when the vibration comes back.

Do just the reverse by accelerating slowly in each gear from 1000 rpm to 2500 rpm and note in each gear when the vibration starts and ends if it does.

you could have internal problems in the transmission (secondary shafts bent, egged out of round, bad needle bearings on the gears, etc.

BTW how hard are you gearjammin???????:)

Pull the wheels. If it only does it after a mud-fest, you may have an off-center mud build-up on the back off the wheels. That will cause a severe out of balance condition. You can drive in and out of the shakes when the balance is off. Check it out. It might be a free fix.

Do you seriously think he takes his truck off-roading?

Only shifting into 3rd has any noise from the transmission, but that isn't everytime I shift into 3rd. I have replaced the servo piece for the transmission, b/c I have had difficulties changing gears. Since replacing that part I haven't had any problems shifting gears.
Last time I had any hard shifts was when I took the truck to the drag strip about 3 years ago.

The closest I have gotten to a mudfest was kick back of mud from during/after a rain that has washed mud into the roadway and I ran over it.

Puting it in neutural wont take anything but the motor out of the equation. Could still be a rearend or tranny issue. They will still be turning at the same rate
