View Full Version : best tire size for my truck.

i have a 1991 2wd s10.
so far i have a PA 2" body lift, with 30's. the 30's seem pretty tucked, and they rub if i hit a bump too hard. sound bad.
so with the addition of fabtech spindles when my income tax gets done, what would be the best size i should look for?
i want the largest tire i can, but allow the tires to travel up and down, unlike my 30's now(atleast they look cool).
also, what tire? i want a good all terrain that is good on and off road.
Thanks!

What are you looking to do with the truck? Just look better? better traction? Off roading? All of the above?

i want the ability to have a truck that looks awesome, and be able to take the bumps of a mild trail too without sounding awful and scraping. so yeah, i'm looking for excellent traction, good looks, and the capability of off roading (nothin serious)

how much lift are the spindles supposed to give? Since you're rubbing as it is, you may not get much bigger.
If you go to a good tire shop, they will do a test fit for you to help you make sure that you don't go to big. Or too small for that matter.

the spindles say 3.5"
so as i am now, with 2 inches, i have 30's but they seem to big.
i'm seein with 3.5 added, i could maybe roll with something 32's or in that ballpark.
but....there are people out there with a ton of lift, with long travel and they're only runnin 33's, so i'm thinking 31's would be suitable.
i just dont want to look dinky with a good amount of lift, and tiny tires

I would think that if your 30's are rubbing on hard bumps right now, then I think that 32's would work with the extra 3.5". To give you and idea, remember that the ZR2's use 31" tires. If this is a daily driver, I'd say go for the smallest tire that you'll be satisfied with--if that makes sense. The other thing to think about is that most of the tires are going to be a little wider as they go taller. So watch for rubbing on the frame or suspension components. I see that you have after market wheels, so that will depend on the offset of them.
I know what you mean about having a lift and dinky tires. Like when I was driving my blazer around for a day with my lift and the stock tires, it looked ridiculous... LOL. I wish I had taken some pics.
Do you have any pics of your truck posted right now?

i agree with the 32's. the bfg all terrains are a good tire all around, and have great offroad traction, looks, and the on road ride is great. if you go with 32's, you could get some wheel spacers to set them out a little bit and give it a little wider stance. whenever i lift mine im prolly gonna run 1.5 or 2 inch spacers for that look and extra room.

Honestly if I were you i would get BFG All Terrains in 31's. I know yours is a first gen but i have 2" coils and spindles and my 30's rub a little bit on full lock, If you get 32's it is gonna be like it is now rubbing on big bumps. Just my .02

careful, Keith, when you talk about rubbing at lock, you're talking about cranking the steering wheel, all the way over, right? so that's an issue with the width of the tire. Now like I said usually taller = wider (usually), but with the different offset of the wheels and possibly the use of spacers, he might get 32's to work.
So you did get the front lift coils? I never saw a post back in your thread about it.

Yeah thats true, it could work.
The fabtech spindles lift the front 3.5" inches(more like 3) and it makes the front wider about 1" to 1.5" each side, so with spacers and the spindles then I think it could be wide enough not to rub too bad, and you can always trim inner fenders or bumpers.
I posted in my spindle thread about the coils.

the guy at the offroad shop trimmed this much.
i'd probably have to trim the bottoms of the fender flares, if the fabtech's do widen the stance an inch or two like stated. as long as i look bad ass

alright, success.
i went to s10extremist and was lookin around and came across this picture of a truck. (http://www.s10extremist.org/93prerunners10.htm)
so he has a 2wd, with 2" body lift, and 3.5" fabtech...the exact set up ill have soon enough. he's rolling on 31's
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y19/flipped_cracker/93prerunners10.jpg
there was another 2nd gen, with 5.5" of lift (which is what i would have) rolling on 31's also. im guessing 31's is about the common size for my set up, from what i'm seeing. the 2nd gen is all suspension though, dont know how much it would be different to a suspension/body lift combo.

You said you have some rubbing w/ your 30's right now, right? so can you tell if trimming the inner fender there took care of it?
man, i'd like to think that with either one of those setups pictured above they would have been able to get 32's under there, but I guess it depends on how much you want to push the limit. Like I said before, if you're unsure, have the tire store do a test fit.

when it comes to my 30's, i rub when the wheel is turned all the way, and when i hit a bump, like a curb up to a driveway...if i hit that too fast, it'll scrape and make a noise. but before i had the inner wheel well trimmed, i couldnt turn without it sounding horrible. i think the bolt was gettign caught on the wheel tread and that could have been the reason why.
as for the pics posted, it looks like they could squeeze 32's in, but with the 31's they have more room. so i guess 31's are a safe way to go without pushing it too much.
btw, the 2nd gen looks bad ass, in my opinion.

today i was cleaning my truck when i decided to turn the wheel all the way and see how much clearance there was between the tire (outside edge) and the truck.....
you cant even fit a dang finger in that gap. so i can drive pretty mildly and it's just about to touch, and if i hit a bump, at full turn, it's gonna touch for sure.

If you got the whole fabtech lift you would have about 8.5" of lift then 33's would fit easy ;)

geez, I would hope so. :) Maybe at that point it would be capable of going off road ;)

actually...from the look of the space in the wheel well, they could prolly fit 32's if not 33's in there with trimming the vailance and what not.
Go with the 31's. Anyone can put huge tires on their ****, but when it rubs on every turn, and the axle cant articulate at all without rubbing tires there is not point.

something to think about...this is the lift i was thinking of getting...but i got to thinking how bad it would be to lift a 2wd and decided against it...
6 inches of lift for 2wd...if your gonna lift 2wd might as well go all the way...and i bet you could fit 35's with this set up...actually i know you will be able to fit 35's...

well I have the 5.5" lift and my 30's even rub when turning all the way, so unless you did a big a** bodylift then i just cant see 35's fitting.

no pictures yet...i ordered them last night, and was excited so i decided to post it. it'll probably be a while before i can actually install them though. i'm pretty financially tight. and i want to get some new ball joints and coils(pretty mild lift) before install that way it can all be done at once. i need to see how to do it myself to save some money
