View Full Version : My New HIDs

I have heen wanting some HIDs for a while. Recently my Hi-Watt pretty bluish-white bulbs have been giving me fits. I had done a relay upgrade, a ground upgrade and a hi-temp harness upgrade. It had lasted longer but still became a problem. My drivers side hasnt come on by itself for a month. Id either pound the lamp and it would come on or Id have to pop the hood and fool around with the harness. Last night in the rain particularly pissed me off each time I had to get in and turn them on. But I had ordered the HID kit on Monday, so I was anticipating them getting here.
Today they arrived and I wasted no time in getting them in. Weather here is horrible starting yesterday evening. Today wasnt any better. But I was able to get the install in between the thundershowers.
Heres a pic of mother natures pissed off fury approaching my casa:

The kit is really nice. All metal ballast, nice harnesses and decent fit. The instructions were kinda scketchy tho. But they are easy to figure out. I wish they had come with a Ballast bracket, but instead had a doublesided 3M tape patch to attach them with. My Ballast fit snugly on the ledge just behind the parking lamps. The one harness I looped around between the opening in the top corner where the fender and radiator support meet. And the other through the round hole behind the Lo Beam.
The Ballast make a hit of a humming sound. Probably normal considering what a ballast does and its function.
The Bulbs were very nice and in a screw on capsule for shipping. I got a 8000K kit which is listed and a Blueish-White. They have more of a white than I expected than blue. But they are perfect for me. The next ones up were Brilliant Blue. They wouldve been OK, but I wouldnt want to risk getting pulled over for them.
I got them from an E-Bay store. There was 3 options I had from US Sellers. They all had 1yr warranty on Ballast and Bulbs. They also had 30-day satisfaction with no restocking fee. But 2 of the 3 had better auctions, more sales and feedback and more professional looking ads. I jst picked one. One set was $71 shipped and the others were $75 shipped. I chose one from the $75 shipped. The Ballast and Box said Xentec.
I had to install some new factory side 9006 harnesses since mine were melting. They were suposedly Hi-Temps. BS!!
Ill try to get some night pics for a better look at them tonight if the rain stays clear. The shots I got are from the overcast day, but I turned on a filter in my camera to darken the pic up a bit. So it looks darker in the pic than it was.
Heres a pic and Ill get some more later:

Any questions feel free to ask.:D
Im am going to get some new headlamps one day also. I like the way my freinds GTO HIDs and projectors work out. But I just dont favor the look of projectors on the S-10. Plus they are all halo and overly designed IMO.
My Rt lamp is yellowing on the upper edge. I did take the time today and fixed it tho. I wetsanded with 2000 grit at 1st but had to go 1000grit and even 800 grit in some spots. The yellow came out about 99%. I used a medium buffing wheel on my Makita drill and some 3M Plastic Polish to finish it off. It will do for now.

Naw. It is headin a eatserly direction. Sux. I got a late start tonite, so no pics. But I promice Ill get some soon.
THX for the complements all you guys n gals.
Scott, Im stll waitin 4 your SC to get on.
The yellowing sanding isnt that bad to get off. I still want new headlamps. Fords usually do worse. =)
Tho I stand corrected......they are more bluish at night when reflecting off the road reflectors and other cars than I thought. =)
I love them. Just need 2 align them.

Those look great, Mike! Are there any just regular replacement bulbs that are about that color? I don't want to deal with HID's right now and want to make sure I like the color first...probably a duh question but I figure you all are used to it by now!

The StreetGlow OPTX and the Nokyas had a similar coloring. But they were more current draw than the plugs and OEM wiring was able to handle.
Im going to see how this HID kit goes. But from electronics knolwledge, this is the way to go.
The 8K kit that I got may be too bluish for some. At the 1st glance, they are very white....but after driving tonight, they are a bluish hue on the highway reflectors and light colored vehicles. Im still liking it. But for some, maybe a 6K kit os more white and more appropriate.
Im a pimp...so they are perfect 4 me. Plus my blue LED SS mirror logo is a nice touch. See my Mirror Refurbish Thread 4 that =)

I didnt really get any good night shots. So on the way home tonight I got out the camera and did a MPEG that shows them on the road at night. They light up everything nicely. The camera view actually looks duller than in real life.
I did this holding the camera on top of the steering wheel, while trying to keep it straight and oh, I had 2 shift too =)
I did a hard run with the windows up so you can also simutaneously hear the exhaust sound from the cab.
I let off B4 shifting into 3rd due to traffic coming up. 1AM and cops are out. I have it in 4th and as I approach the flashing light I do a 4th to 3rd drop at about 60MPH and chirp the tires.

I agree they were worth it.
Gonna get some #881 kit for the fogs soon to match. Im waiting on this guy to get back about some clear headlamps. I was going to wait on those, but if this deal goes through I got to jump on them. Otherwise it will be Fog HIDs going in. Just dont have funds right now for both.
Im going to go to an 1/8th track pretty soon thats close by in Albany GA. Just got to wait for a few weeks. Its a hectic time right now for me.

Im fortunate. The TA was my 2nd car and have had it since 1995. Bought form 2nd owner and both of its owners were older ladies. The truck is my 1st new vehicle.
I tend to take really good care of my belongings.:)

must have missed this thread over the weekend - looks great man. is the kit universal (i.e. would it work for a 'noma too)?

They are plug and play. The Low beams on the S-series 98-ups are 9006 and the Highs are 9005. Fogs are 881. Extremes have a different Fog but IDK the number.
The only other different ones is the Envoys with the HIDs from the factory. But those lamps are expensive, add the OEM HID kit and they are downright brutal on price.
But, yes, they are the same kit as you need.
There was an adapter harness which I had to somewhat assemble...easy as pie tho. That goes from the OEMplug to the Ballast. Then the Ballast had a PVC sheilded tubelike cable that went to 2 seperate (but standard for most aftermarket HIDs) sigle weatherpack connectors. Those are identical to the old single wire O2 sensor plugs. Bulbs fit like a glove. They have a pigtail of the 2 wires and the oppisite weatherpack single connectors. They did have an additional grommet on the bulbs that isnt needed for this truck. But its there =)
Install time (other than putting the ballast out of the way and secrue....and sort of routing the wires nicely) was no more time than changing the bulbs.

I have been seriously considering some HID's ever since seeing them on Brenda's GTO. Damn nice Mike, damn nice.

Thanks Sparky.
The difference in vision is soo nice. I dont have night blindness or anything, but the way the reflectors and lines light up, they are hard to miss. Plus mine ar behind the diffused factory lenses.
Im very happy

hey mik, that truck of yours sounds tough. i just watched the vid and now i want some HID's. i know how dark them roads are where your at. so you gotta be loving the new upgrade. looks real good. i do have a question though. whats the daylight running lamps look like in the day time? you gotta pic of that? im interested to see.

The DRLs are the Highbeams and they come on at half voltage. Those are OPTX bulbs and not HIDs. Im curious about HIDs and DRLs tho. I dont think I would do the highs in HIDs anyway. I do want to do the factory fogs tho.
Yes, some roads here do get dark. Still the camera didnt get a good shot of the actual brilliance of them.
Ill try to get some daytime pics of the HIDs, DRLs and better night pics for ya soon.
Thx for the complements!! =)

My freind tells me these ballast are made by Bosch.
He just bought a set for his GF birthday but from another seller. His seller is also in the US and they are the same name brand. There is another seller with them for $65 Shipped. But I didnt think their ad was quite as professional.
My drivers side just started to have a delay firing up in the recent days. But I hear thats common and they will be fine. A freind has a car that has stock HIDs and they do the same thing. But they have a warranty, so Im not real worried about it being a problem.

Wow. I'm jealous. That looks awesome!! I didn't plan on it, but now I might have to invest in some...
Can't wait to see the new headlamps. They will definitely be more bright, I know mine were and that's just with regular bulbs, haha.
And 20 degrees, wow. Doesn't hardly ever get that cold here, crazy to hear it's that cold in Florida.

THX =)
Im not nightblind or anything but having blue eyes they are sensitive to sunlight and certain harsh lights. I notice they get tired and sore after long night drives. It did seem better with my previous bulbs that were whiter than normal halogens. Thats why I didnt want to go back to those after I was getting the plug burnt issue. So I did the HIDs.

Those lamps are projectors. My freinds GTO has them with HIDs. They just emmit a different pattern and it doesnt seem as 'wide' of a spread.
