View Full Version : lifting a 4x4 s-10
this is a link that shuold not be forgoten. This is the first good supension lift I've seen for a 4x4 s-truck
http://www.bds-suspension.com/suspensionsystems_1chevyzr2.html
I hope every one will add there own links to it as well.
good suspention lifts for the transaxel style 4x4 GMs are getting hard to find because of lack of interest or info so we all need to try our best to get this link going.
I really wish sections like this were under a a genrale performance section in the main menu cense GM supension is basicaly the same in all vehicles, but it's not so don't assume because you have an s-10 dosn't mean the info is not relivent to outher GM owner and vise-versa. If you find something and your not exactly sure where to put it please spread it around all the forums or send it to one of the admin or super mods
Will that BDS 5" lift fit on a 4WD S-10 Pick-up though. I've seen a 2" from super lift that says that it's for a standard 4WD S-10. I've just always wondered how difficult it would be to retro-fit the Superlift 6" suspension system for a standard 4WD S-10
outher than the ladder frame and shocks I don't thinck there is much differnce in the regular 4x4 and the zr2.
if you look at the kit it replases most of the front end anyway. I would email or call bds and ask them. I used their kit on an 04 silverodo in june and it's a real nice kit, It looked to be allot better built and went in allot easyer than the superlift kits I've installed. It's still a fairly involved install and it didn't look like the guy goes offroad in his truck much. I'll get ahold of him a see if he's had any issues, but if there was a problem I thinck he would have gotten ahold of me by now.

Both Superlift (6") and BDS (5") have kits for the extended cab non-ZR2 s-trucks that have favorable responses in the offroad forums. The ZR5 crewcab guys tend to swear by the BDS lift.

Where can i get a cheap 2-3" lift for a first-gen s10? Or should i just add-a-leaf the back and crank up the torsion bars to just before the CV boots start to rub themselves apart.
If you want cheap, go body lift... otherwise, watch eBay for a Rough Country or Superlift 2 inch. I've got the Superlift 2" on my Blazer Sport... 4 leaf springs and shackles for the rear.
If you are just going to crank the torsion bars, then it would be easier to do just shackles in the rear... springs are a real PITA. What size tire are you hoping to run?

i'm hoping for 32 or 33" mebbe 11.50. Nothing extreme. gas costs $1/litre here
Well, with 2-3" lift, 32s will fit with minor trimming/reshaping... if you plan on using stock wheels, the tires may rub on the frame and swaybar at full lock. However, if your torsion bars are saggy and worn or you have a sport package, you may be lucky to fit 31s.

A lot of guys without the ZR2 suspension can fit 31's with just a bodylift, at least 2". I know to get anything bigger than 31's under my ZR2 blazer I would need a 2" bodylift and fender and fender flare trimming along with a t-bar crank which I don't reccomend. There are a lot of guys on zr2.com with lifted s-10's that don't have the zr2 package.

The SuperLift 6" and BDS 5" lifts are not just for the ext-cab. What suspension-wise is different between a reg cab/ext cab/crew cab? Nothing. :)
And yes, hotflash is right, a lot of guys can fit the 31's with just a bodylift, but I guarantee you they rub sometime or another. The ZR2 can't fit anything bigger than a 31 without rubbing, even with a bodylift.
I run 33" tires, well actually 285/75R16 Cooper Discovery S/T tires on my '87 S10-Blazer. I have a 3" body lift and trimmed the fenders.
Below are some pics of how much trimming I had to do to fit the 33". Note the metal trim ring covers my hack job. Last pic is my stock '00 with 30" BFG KO's sitting next to the '87 with the 33" and 3" body lift. Use the windows for comparison.
Edit: In the 3rd pic, the white box is where I beat my firewall back about 1/2" with a 10 pound long handle sledge hammer. That was done with the inner fender well removed. To get the inner fender well to reshape to the firewall mod, I bolted it in place to the firewall with 1" long self tapping hex head screws. Look for them in the 4th pic.

I need to know, is there a 6" lift for my '88 GMC S-15 Jimmy 4WD? If so, who do I go to? I also have little money, so cost is key. thanks

the question is how are you going to be using the truck? what size tire are you planning on running? all this plays into what type of lift you are best to go with. IFS lifts are not cheap at all, depending on the intended use you might be better off to go with a SFA
