Is it possible to eliminate the balance shaft w/o removing the cam? I know you can remove the gear, thereby rendering the balance shaft useless. I know that, if you remove the balance shaft, you must plug a couple oil holes to prevent pressure loss. Can either method be accomplished w/o removal of cam? I intend to replace timing set and intake manifold this weekend, and would like to do this at same time. How would be the best way to plug the necessary oil holes?

Yes. just pull the timing cover, take the timing chain off, take the gear for the balance shaft off(the top small gear) and put it back together
i wouldn't waste my time removing the BS and having to plug the holes, it's better to leave it in.

just out of curiosity, removing/eliminating the balance shaft will do what?

free up an estimated unproved 15hp.

and does this have negative effects on the engine, or does it just shake more at idle like my old 90 sierra did?!?

well....I can deal with a little shake/vibration, that aint gonna kill me..might free up some fuel economy..less rotational mass...who knows..something to think about

I could be wrong, but here's my logic on it. Pretty much same principal as underdrive pulleys. The less power you waste on spinning what in, or on the front of, your motor, the more free power you have to spin what's BEHIND your motor, i.e. the tires.:D
