I have a 2000 s-10 ext cab w/2.2l and a 5-speedand 170,000+ miles on it. I lost my clutch on the interstate today. It would not disengage and I had to run like 5 stop signs to get home. Before this happened I was hearing noises in first and second gear and a bad clanking in third when I gased it, fourth seemed fine and fifth vibrated alot. I still had this problem after the clutch went. I pulled the tranny, the slave cylinder was toast, the big bearing under the cover where the input shaft is only had like 7 ball bearings left in it, the rest were ground up. It still goes in all gears just fine when I was spinning the shaft by hand ( I know this isn't anything compared to the power of the engine) My book doesn't show a overhaul procedure for the transmission and I was wondering how hard it would be to rebuild. I am a pretty good mechanic when it comes to everyone elses stuff, but when mine breaks, it usually is catastrophic. So far I know I need a new slave cylinder/throwout bearing, and that main bearing. could I be lucky and just replace the one bearing? I know it is always a good rule of thumb to replace all bearings but this thing has 170,000 miles that are ALL very hard miles. Lets just saying I go through a set of 4 tires every year and I like to grab 2nds, 3rds, and a occasional 4th. If it would help I can post some pics of it. Any help is much appreciated and if you have a problem with well, just about everything from Mp3 players to computers to xbox's, I can help you. I seem to be a jack of all trades and a master of none...... except being a master at being a jack of all trades.

Sounds like it could be the throw out bearing. Your sycronizers sound fine. Rebuilding them is not hard if you have the right tools and equipment. Im not sure what your tranny looks like but if its a Borg & Warner t-5 it should have a top plate. Pop that plate off and check your gears and counter shaft for chips or broken teeth. With your 2.2 I doubt you busted some gears. Could of if the input shaft bearings check those to see if they're bad.
I had a t-5 that was struggling to hold up agaisnt a built 350. I was blown up 3times in about a 5 month period. Finally I got enough money to get some high strength gears put in it. I told the mechanic to change all the bearings. Turns out he didn't because he said they looked good. Turns out they were bad and I busted my brand new counter shaft and 3 gears. and that was the first day I took it out after the rebuild and wasn't even getting on it. Well hope you figure out whats wrong. Hopefully its something simple like a throw out bearing.

I think it is a nv1500 since it is a 2000 and not a 95 or earlier. The pic I seen of the nv1500 looks just like it.

well if you think its the gears its not hard to check em out. Usually when a throw out bearing goes out it makes a whining type of noise.

I know the throw out bearing is bad for a fact and yes it was whinning for about 10 months now. but even before and after the cluth failure the tranny was doing the same noiseswhich lasted about a hour before the clutch went. The clutch failing did not change the way the tranny felt. Talk about bad luck, throw out bearing and tranny at the same time!!! Oh yeah, the slave cylinder bolts were loose, like I took them off with my fingers and what I am guessing is the auto-adjust thingy for the slave cylinder also actually fell out. Whe I replaced the clutch last year I did not replace the slave cylinder because of the price. I probrably could put what is left of this one back together, but I am not going to. I will get a new one for sure this time. It seems the tranny failure caused vibration that loosened the bolts for the slave cylinder and just kind of caused a chain-reaction of failures.

found a tranny with 71k on it $for 400 so I am just going to put a new one in instead of rebuilding it.

The NV-1500 is definately what you have.
I would replace all those parts and do a new clutch kit as well.
170K miles and beating on it like that isnt very wise. An occasianal spirited drive is cool but constant abuse isnt.

The clutch plates were changed only about a year ago and I blew the head gasket last summer so the plates all look realy good still so I am just going to go with a new slave cylinder since this was the only part I didn't change when I put the clutch in last year.

ok I got a tranny that is supposed to only have 71,000 miles on it but when I was looking at it, the input shaft seemed to have alot of play in it and closer inspection of the throwout bearing revealed that the input shaft has enough play in it that it is hitting the edges of the slave cylinder/throw-out bearing. Is this Normal?? I am very skeptical, not to mention very pissed off right now.
