Site went down. What happened?

The site itself didn't go down, but the network provider that handles the internet connection was having issues. Hopefully they've got it fixed now. Don't like having to make phone calls for this kind of stuff late at night. Oh well, part of the job. Sorry for the down time on that :(

I just got done typing a post and hit submit and then nothing. Thought my computer was craping out again.

I will be taking down the site at some point this weekend, have to do a major update to the software, but when I do that you should just get some warning page that says the site is down temp for work, or something.

Oh, got more details on what it was, another site that is in the same datacenter was expereincing a DDOS attach (Distributed Denial Of Service).

For those not familiar with it, some jerk who has infected hundreds or thousands of peoples computers with viruses or trojans instructs them all to start simultaneously sending bogus webpage requests to a webserver. This not only causes the webserver to bog down as it waits for replies from the bogus requests to continue sending webpages to, but it also eats up network bandwidth. This usualy takes out a site or at minimum brings it to a crawl.

Our site was not the target, but since this attack was so large, it was eating up all the bandwidth for every site at the datacenter. They were eventualy able to block out the attackers from the network backbone to stop the internet traffic flood.
