I saw that there were a few "bots" on here. I have heard bad things about them. I know on other forums there is a box w/ letters you have to type in. I was just suggesting, that it might be a good idea.

The BOTS are a good thing! There only a problem when the site server runner doesnt have the site up to date security wise is all. I will have to say DCAF has done that myself. Bots are ways to set your site up in search engines, the one here is a new MSN bot and a few google ones, so nothing really there if security is up to snuff!! Without them running and finding things site dont come up in searches!!

Hey nothing bad about being paranoid, that's why I have a job :) .

I will try and keep ontop of security issues, but we do want to encourage the bots to scan some parts of the board helps with search ratings a Jedi mentioned. I try to use some techniques to keep them from doing anything damaging, but if it's a malicous bot there is only so much you can do.

What is a bot in this case? Whats it do, etc? The only bot I'm familiar with is those used in IRC.

Its part of a search engine site in this case. Its job is to crawl the web looking to see thing like topics etc which are on sites. When you google search something the bots info that has been retrieved and added to a data base adds to the answers you get for site suggestions. It uses all kinds of case sensitive information to kinda see what your site has to offer etc. I cant explain it that well cause I aint literate savy on these that far. But basically thats what it does!! If there were no bots or spiders these search engines would have to rely soley on what info is given to them and that would take more people and time than I can imagine to pin down what the site is etc!!

There arent limited to search engine useage and thats why the fuss about them! But search engines ones are the ones we like!
