Alright guys,
I need some help.

A buddy of mine is shipping out to the sandbox in a couple of months. He is in charge of running convoys, and it looks like he is going to be running urban resupply. Do to the lack of offensive armament/armor carried by his vehicles, he is looking to create a couple of 'mobile fortresses' (think 'Nam era Guntruck) to help with convoy security. He has a couple of requirements, in that it is able to be swapped out onto different trucks and be able to withstand MG fire. These would probably be used on 5 ton trucks. Any ideas/plans/discussion will be of use.

I'm not familiar with the trucks yo're talking about. Do you mean Humvees? or those 6 wheeled things with like tents on the back? Either way it sounds like a good bit of fabrication, especially if he intends to make it swappable.

His unit uses these:

Or something very, very similar.
The HMMV's they have are not going to be uparmored before they leave, nor do they have the capability to mount as much firepower as he would like. Probable armament will include Mk19's, M249's, and M2HB's.

My original thought was to find an old M113 APC, strip it, (Remove suspension, drivetrain, everything but the hull) and mount the hull in the back. But that looks like it'd be too tall/too large of a target. As these would be used at the front and rear of a convoy, they gotta go in some pretty tight spaces and get out again without slowing the rest.

Fabrication would be pretty easy, hard part is going to be finding the material.

.5 Inch Heavy Machine Gun

The powerful L1A1 12.7 mm Heavy Machine gun (HMG) is an updated version of the Browning M2 'Fifty-cal' - recognised as one of the finest heavy machine guns ever developed. Currently, the HMG provides integral close-range support from a ground mount tripod or fitted to a Land Rover TUM using a Weapon Mount Installation Kit (WMIK) and a variety of sighting systems. The performance of the HMG has recently been enhanced with a new 'soft mount' (to limit recoil and improve accuracy) and a quick change barrel.

M60D ENHANCED

The M60D machine gun fires 7.62mm NATO standard ammunition, that can penetrate light armor. The ring sight and spade grips makes acquiring and tracking a target quite simple, even while in motion. The weapon is also readily removable to permit loading/unloading of a helicopter and to provide protective fire outside the aircraft after landing.

The M60D model is designed for mounting on wheeled and tracked vehicles, naval craft, and as a door gun on utility and cargo helicopters. Mounted on pintle type assemblies, the M60D provides fire support for ground operations.
