View Full Version : Pulleys or Chip?
To start off, I have an 1987 S-10 with a 150hp 2.8L V6, a 700-R4 Trans and 3.42 gears (4.10's in the future)
Ok, so I am either gonna buy one or the other, not both, would get out of my monthly truck budget (im a poor college student). I can either buy a custom burnt chip for my truck that advertises a 10% gain over my hp right now. ($70) OR I can get a set of underdrive pulelys that will gain me a net of 8-12hp and 10-12lb/ft tq. ($60 Shipped) What are your opinions. Im strongly leaning towards the pulleys. Has any one ever gotten a chip burned for a 2.8? Was it a good experience/bad experience? Who did you go through?

i'd go with the pullies for now. after you do the gears, then have a chip done. my $.02
i would do the pullies unless you have a large system then you need that altinator spinning fast enough.
would a chip be able to re-calibrate my speedo on such an old truck? Or is my speedo mechanical?

I'd go with the pulleys, they'd cost less right up and you won't have to pay for 93 gas. Also you have a 700-R4 that won't be reprogramed with the chip like a newer truck would so your shifting won't be inproved (my fav part of the PPG3 is inproved frimness but I have a 4L60E).

your speedo is cable driven. It has plastic gears at the tailhousing of the tranny.

I would go with the pulleys for now. Then after you get more mods done to it then get a chip.I emailed Tunercat about my 93 S10 and he sent me this response.
Hi Roy,
Thank you for your e-mail regarding the C.A.T.S. Tuner program.
To tune your vehicle, you'll need the Tuner program ($69.95) and the $E6 ECM Definition File ($19.95) which does support your '93 S10.
In addition to the above software, you'll also need an EPROM programmer and an EPROM eraser. Virtually any EPROM programmer will work with the EPROM's used in these ECM's. We recommend the Pocket Programmer from Xtronics (www.xtronics.com (http://www.xtronics.com/)). It is very reasonably priced and works well. Like the programmer, almost any EPROM eraser will work. Xtronics also carries an inexpensive eraser that works fine.
If you would like to be able to tune your vehicle in 'real-time', that is while the engine is running, you'll need the RT Tuner program ($99.95) instead of the standard Tuner program, the $E6 ECM Definition File and the Romulator EPROM emulator from Xtronics or either the Ostrich or the AutoProm from Craig Moates (http://moates.net (http://moates.net/)). Real-time tuning allows you to immediately see the affects of any changes you are making and can significantly shorten the tuning process. The RT Tuner program does everything the standard Tuner program does in addition to real-time tuning support so you don't need both programs. When you're finished tuning, you'll want to program an EPROM with your final calibration and disconnect the emulator so you'll still need an EPROM programmer.
If you have any other questions, or would like additional information, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Best regards,
TC
Of course some things will be different than yours.Mine is a 4.3 and has a 4L60E.I don't like a lot of what is availabe for OBDI ecm's.Most chips ive seen just don't do enough. So I looked in to Tunercats products.I wanna be able to burn my own chips for my S10 and they have the best options.
