I heard that going from the 3.42 to 3.73 gears is good, but I also heard that on the highway it sucks. Anything after 70 mph it doesn't have the umpf to go faster. Anybody know anything about this.

It really isn’t that big of a jump, about 190 RPM more for the 3.73 at 65 MPH. You will need to have the VCM reprogrammed if you choose to make this change.

Whats it do for your launch and 60' time. Also your talking about the vcm for the speedometer right. I have the hypertech pp and it does the change for the rear gear.

i have 3.73 in my rear and on the highway isn't that bad, and that whole lack of "umph" just means that you have to push a bit harder on the gas! lol, i love it off the line, i'm never really "raced" my truck yet...but i can tell ya if your truck is less than my 5400#'s than you'll be way happy

Thats probably the extra AWD weight. And the 4 door deal.

I switched from a 3.42 to a 3.73 and it wasn't that big of a change.Noticeable yes and made for a little better power transfer all through the rpm range.I still have plenty of pedal and power after 70 mph.I wouldn't do it in your application. It is one hell of a job to switch out the front. But if you have the funds and time go for it.I wish I would have went to a 4.10 gear myself. It doesn't hurt gas as much as some would think. It does however limit your topend because you will run out of gear with a 4.10 gear.I may switch mine this summer.I have a 4.10 rear out of a 98 4 cylinder S10.

i'd go to 4.10's imo. you will really notice a difference performance wise there. i think you'll be happier also with a 4500lbs vehicle
awd + gears=$$$$$$$$$$$$$
hit the swap meets. I've got more gears and 3rd mebers than I can handel. I'm getting real fast at rebuilding this things so i can help with the rear diff. The front diff is your problem I've never torn into one of those on an awd

I thought your car had an 8.5 ring gear?

BVR hit on something. When I wanted to change out mine on the 4x4, which is something I WILL NOT do myself, been there did it with about a 60% sucess rate, there arent many willing to do it for you even putting up the cash in there faces. Something in these little independant front end housings seem to make people shy away from doing them. I was told flat out, go buy a used front pumkin section!!
