My monitor on my desktop very frequently now is becoming a pain. While doing pretty much anything the monitor will go completely blank. Looks like it turns itself off or someone has pulled the power cable out but the power is still on because the green power light is on while the screen is completely black. I've put an old monitor up there to see if it was my comp or just the monitor and well the old one worked fine, it's just this one that keeps going out. And to get it going again I have to punch it in the side to get it working.
It's a CRT and is fairly new.

That sux.
Well... if you are hitting it to get it going again, I'd have to say there's something loose. :D
You do know there's extremely high voltage inside there... right? Enough to kill you...

lol glad you told me that, I've broken the panel on the outside from beating on it.
Yea... it's something around 35,000v... basically it'll stop your heart. Do you here any crackling or other noises when the picture stops?

Yeah, that's exactly what it does. Crackles and kinda fades out.

but in all seriousness id have to say the monitors dying. If the old one worked and the newer one didnt it be the monitor, is it still under a warranty?
Well... as with many CRTs, the HOT(High Output Transformer) tends to get hot and it can eventually crack the housing causing the crackling noise. But... more than likely, if it is leaking it's tripping the protection circuit making it shutdown. If you carefully remove the cover, DO NOT mess with the big red wire that goes from the HOT to the picture tube. Turn it on and turn off the lights... watch for arcing at the HOT. If you're lucky and that's the case, you may be able to get some dope(not drugs) and coat the cracked/leaking area for a fix. Other thing is... the crackling may just be heat expansion crackling. :)

no you haven't, unless you work for the electric company. not something to mess with. seriously be careful.
You've been hit with more than 34,000 volts at 1 amp... and lived to tell about it? Hmmm Were you playing with a tesla coil? LOL

That video scares me even more, that's a lot of electricity....
And thing is about buying a new monitor... I have money for my new exhaust setup and maybe an intake. If I buy a monitor it eliminates both :/

Usually places that work on computers. You may even be able to get one for free from someone(that you know) that has an old one laying around.

Only places that works on computers around here are best buy and circuit city. Kinda sad. And the monitor I'm using now was free but its a 15" compared to my 19" I was using.
Look in the yellow pages... should be computer shops around you. Ebay? Garage sales? Flea Market? Craigs List?

Tom, what do I need to do to make that arc?:D
An old TV that you can pull the high output transformer out of. A bit of electrical knowledge and lots of guts... hehe

I just tore an old tv apart that was in a nice cabinet( I wanted the cabinet.) I got hit about 3 times before the capacitor fully discharged. It definitely gets your attention.

Only a little.:D It was like getting shocked by very strong static electricity or a plug wire. I knew it was in there, but I wasn't too concerned because I know it's amperage that kills you not volts.

Hell, I'm too scared to play the schocker games at spencers. Much less play with that kind of crap.

TV repairman.... NOT! I haven't used my degree since I got it. I got a job making more money than my degree would've gotten me so I never applied it. I did repair and sell 80's video games for a few years. I fix stuff properly around the house. I have the knowledge and that's what matters most. :)

Insignia 19"
IS-CM100751
Insignia is the biggest piece of crap ever sold on American shores, even worse than Acer. Best Buy cut a deal with a chinese company to build millions of low cost product for them. They sell alot of items that have a VERY short lifespan. When it finally totally fails... trash can it.

Funny thing is... I bought it from best buy too... No wonder it was so cheap
I gotta have an lcd for college anyways... would suck carrying a huge crt up the dorm stairs.
Ebay for a used flat panel or look locally on craigslist. They are really getting cheaper now.
