this is the chart in the artical section for the rear axle. in my glove box I have gu6 which is 3.42 and i have g80 which is Locking Heavy Duty Rear Axle ( Eaton and Zexel Torsion) does that mean posi. because my truck does not have posi. I would say limited slip but not posi. If I spin tires one spins and if I go long enough the other might start spinnig but not always.

GT4- 3.73 Rear Axle Ratio

GT5- 4.10 Rear Axle Ratio

GU4- 3.08 Rear Axle Ratio

GU5- 3.23 Rear Axle Ratio

GU6- 3.42 Rear Axle Ratio

G80- Locking Heavy Duty Rear Axle ( Eaton and Zexel Torsion)

is it the original rear end?????It's common to find older used trucks with junkyard rear ends under them. I guess we need to get all the id tags for gm rear and post them. Anyone want to help me?????
you may have what is called an open differental. what's happening is the tire with the least resitant(genraly the passenger tire for some reason) spins untill it heats up and grabs traction. the power then transfers to the outher tire untill it grabs traction.
when you spin one wheel fast enough sometimes the differntal will momentary lock(this is not a good thing with an open differntal)
From every thing I've read and been told the g80 rear should be at the least a limited slip rear end. But I don't belive those were offered in an s-truck until 96 (I'll look it up). It may be time for a differntal oil change. This will tell you for sure what you have.

yeah i might do the oil in the rear end pretty soon Because I want to do the tranny to just to make sure everything is new. I wont get around to it until the spring because I am losing my garage right now. but if I have the money I might even put a set of gears in while I'm in there.
