My engine cooling fan is effin LOUD. I have a cowl induction hood but even still you can hear the fan over the engine and everything else. I was wondering if the hood is really making it that much louder or if the fan is running really high and needs to be fixed.
I'll get a video tomorrow if anyone thinks that will help.

I want to see a video. I would assume the cowl hood would let out alot more sound from under the hood.

The clutch could be going bad if its roaring.

Ya it's pretty loud. Only bad on acceleration and low gears though. Once I take her on the highway for awhile then get back on the main road she stays quiet for a bit. But once I hit a stop light or a dead stop and accelerate again it roars again.

Your clutch fan is going out. The roaring is the first sign of failure in them, then you will notice some power loss after time. Either replace it, or do an e-fan swap.
E-FAN! f**k that replace it crap!

Alright. what would I need to buy? and should I be able to do it myself?

X 10 on the clutch going bad.
The thermal clutch is engaged during startup and will roar for a few minutes...dependednt on weather.
While cool, the clutch fluid will disengage the clutch and it will not roar and thus be somewhat divorced from the engine. When the thermal fluid detects heat (higher motor temps/heavy loads) then it engages more and a roar could be heard while driving.
But if its present all the time, the clutch is going bad.
You can replace it or do the E-fan swap. Search that, as there are mny post about it. I did some pics and info recently on my e-fan swap.

I feel dumb but I've searched 15 minutes now for a swap and have turned up empty. Any help?

Make sure you use some heavy duty wire and relays, for the Taraus will pull some serious amps especially on the high side if you have the 2 speed fan.
I got these and really like them, there a little more expensive then the Taraus fan(s), but they cool great, and less amp draw.I have them hooked up to 2 different, thermostatic relays, the big one kicks on a 180,and the smaller one about 185-190, I'm running a 180 Jet thermostat.
I hope this helps you and gives you an idea for there are several fans and routes you can go just don't go with Hayden, lol lol

I'd probably not be able to do that by myself, I don't know enough about it. I may take it to a mechanic and see what he says.

Everything lol, I don't know as much about that kind of stuff as I should...
but here is an extra helper... went to my buddies and used his camera to upload 2 videos.... One from inside the cab and one looking under the hood.

If its at operating temperature and its that loud, you have a bad clutch.
Stickdeath08
05-15-08, 06:54 PM
Even with it being an automatic, it could still be the clutch?

The fan clutch not the tranny clutch.

Yes. The taurus fan could be picked up pretty cheap at a salvage yard probably.

Why a taurus fan exactly? What's so good about it... and please forgive my ignorance.
What about jsut getting one off an old s10 my buddy has or a pull apart?

The taurus fan flows alot of air and is a good fit. By Tarus fan we are talking about one off of a Ford Taurus in case you didn't know.

Ya I saw that. I just don't have the know how to be able to do that. I wish I did but I haven't really had the opportunity to learn.
I'm guessing I'm gonna dig into my exhaust funds and take it to a mechanic to fix this thing because that's more important right now.

It's really not that hard. We can walk you through it.
Trust me, if I can do it, you can do it. I was skeptical at first too, but once I got into it, it was a walk in the park.

Found it it' most likely not the clutch. I ran to the store and bought the hane's manual or w/e it's called and ran the tests it told me to see if it was the clutch and it seems to be fine. I took the fan cover panel off and looked at the clutch and saw everything in place with no leaks. Getting a little irritated.

Your fan can still be bad, even tho there is no fluid leaking. Haynes or w/e it's called isn't the greatest thing out there. I'd still bet on a fan clutch based on what you are describing and what the video's sound like.
This is almost as easy as changing your oil, and a lot less messy.
With the engine OFF!!!(Don't want to lose a hand or at the least some fingers and blood!) Do this.
The following assumes that the fan Clutch is in good shape.
Try and rotate the fan. When the engine is BONE COLD (Overnight) the fan will turn with a moderate amount of resistance. It will NOT turn more than a 1/4 turn after you remove your hand from pushing on it.
Warm up the engine to normal operating temp. TURN OFF ENGINE. Now try and rotate fan. It Should turn easily and spin for a couple of turns. If it does then your fan is ok. If it feels like it did COLD, then get a new clutch.
You need the following tools.
10mm Socket wrench.
A Fan Clutch tool set (either buy one at Auto Zone or rent it.)
12 or 13 mm wrench.
1.) Remove the Upper Shroud with the 10mm socket (7 bolts).
2.)With the fan tool loosen the LARGE NUT on the water pump pulley(it may be a left handed thread so if one way doesn't turn it the other way will).
3.) Remove the 4 bolts holding the fan to the clutch. Throw away the old clutch.
4.) Reverse the above steps to install new clutch.
Ease of install (Easy. I've had Cub Scouts do this one for one of their badges years ago on a F$%& F-150)
Time involved 30-45 minutes.
Relief on Ears....PRICELESS!
Larry
I just thought of something.
D'OH!!!! P.S. Do you have an A.I.R. pump on that 4 banger???? Check and see if the roaring is coming from that area. Use a mechanics stethoscope and put the tip on the A.I.R. PUMP and listen to the sounds. You might have a bad pump or a hose that popped off.

I dunno what you are looking to spend but you can pick up a Tarus fan from a yard for about $30-$50 and then get a VSC controller by Flex-a-lite from Summit for under $100. With this you get a good combo of price $150 ease of install (theinstructions are pretty good) and performance.
Standard VSC (radiator probe)
http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?CP=1&part=FLX-31165&N=700 0&Ntt=FLX~31165 or FLX~33054 or FLX~31163&Ntk=KeywordSearch&rsview=sku&Ns=
VSC with coolant probe (better but more exspensive)
http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?CP=1&part=FLX-31163&N=700 0&Ntt=FLX~31165 or FLX~33054 or FLX~31163&Ntk=KeywordSearch&rsview=sku&Ns=
That'll pretty much take care of you. It shouldn't be much more than the price of a replacement clutch. In the long run you'll save gas too.

Decided to just buy a new fan clutch since I'm on a college budget.
Just wanted to know a simple step by step on how to go about doing this. I have Hayne's but just wanted to make sure what your ideas are. Looks simple.
