Bump. I really want to get this. I would like some feedback from the computer savvy though.
First... does your computer have serial ata?
I havent used seagate in many years, mainly because I got better deals on maxtor and western digital, so I don't know brand quality. Newegg.com has it at 3 egg rating. I wouldn't say it's a bad deal so I give it a neutral vote out of ignorance about it. ;)

Not suggesting this one because I don't know anything about samsung drives either.

I just bought the one you linked Tom. Hopefully I'll have it in and all my files backed up sometime next week.
About 6-7 years ago samsung was having a few small issues with their product quality but, I believe they have made a valiant effort to make a much better product. I have a real nice samsung 19" widescreen flat panel for my other computer that seems to be high quality.

I'll keep everyone posted on how it works. I may have some questions too, since I've never had two harddrives.

I received my new hdd today. I installed it and my computer recognized it with no probs. The reason I got it was to back up my pictures, movies, etc. How do I set it up so I can just put certain files on it?

If i were you, I'd just setup the my documents folder to use the new drive. Right click "my docs", go to properties, click "move target", select the new drive, click OK, then OK again. Then just use the my docs folder to back everything up.
Otherwise, there really isn't a way to automatically get all files of a certain type to a different drive. You'd just have to move over everything that you want there. I think that's what you were asking.

Thanks Jason, I was needing to know that. However, I guess I was wrong about the computer recognizing the new hdd. I can't find it. Does anyone know what I should do?

Wooo hooo! Problem solved. I called a friend who's computer literate and he walked me through it in a couple minutes. Now I have to start transferring all my files.

I keep "losing" my new hard drive. It just won't be there. I turned off the comp., unplugged the sata cable to it, turned it back on, turned it back off, plugged the cable back in, and then turned it back on and it was there. I put some files on it. That was yesterday. Today I turn on my computer and it's not there again. Any suggestions? By not there I mean the comp. is not showing it.
Does bios see the drive? What OS? Comuter make? Sorry... too lazy to read back. :D

The bios sees the drive when the OS sees it. When the bios doesn't see the drive the os doesn't see it.
Windows XP 2000.
It's an HP. I've replaced the motherboard with a Winfast (foxconn).
It seems like every time I turn off the computer it "loses" the drive.
That may actually be a hard drive problem then. Perhaps a bad cable.
So you bought a secondary drive, sata... then plugged it in. Had immediate problems then your geek friend helped get it to work. Then it stopped working? Have you got the geek to look at it for you???
I ask that because I don't want to call it a bad drive before it gets 'hands on' treatment.

No. He has not looked at it. Also I just restarted my computer twice and went into the bios. The first time the bios reconized the drive but, when I went into windows it didn't recognize it. I turned off my computer, unplugged the cable and plugged it back in. I then turned on the comp., went into the bios and it recognized it again. However, when I went into windows it wasn't there again. I'm going to restart my comp. again and then go into the bios and see if it's still there. If it is I'll check windows again. My next step will be to swap the cables with the other drive...

It's not the cable. It seems like it will work one time after I disconnect it and plug it back in. If I go into the bios first it recognizes it there and not in windows. If I just go straight into windows it recognizes it there but, the next time I restart it, it's not there regardless of where i go first.

this piece of crap I'm on right now crashed and burned thursday,I lost a portajohn full of pictures .... I finally got it running again this evening with a factory restore ....to say I'm in the market for a new computer is an understatement
I only need the tower with the operating system installed
and I'm leaning away from Vista right now..
what would you computer nerds suggest ???
sorry about the highjack of your thread.nut thought this would be a good venue for my needs as well .... begging your pardon ,BESPURCELL

No prob. I'm a bit of a thread whore myself.
Brandon, I'd have your buddy look it over. I would want to verify that the new HD is actually working properly. I would see if there is a bios upgrade(I know... bios flash bad!) or better yet... update package software for your motherboard. There is a possibility that your OS is having problems detecting it, but since you are using a sata drive already... not a big chance that's your issue.
Dan, As far as getting a new computer... your best bet would be searching Newegg.com because they have lots of great options and prices. I would stay away from Acer though. They are the bargain basement crap. If you see what you think you want/need, post a link in a new thread and we "geeks" can check it out to see if it's your best bet. ;)
