What are good brands besides Colt, kimber, springfield, etc?
(the ones that cost an arm and a leg). Just for screwing around, target shooting.

I've always wanted a 1911, and after accidentally looking at a few more at a gun store the other day & am wanting one more than ever. GOnna sell some of my paintball gear to pay for it.

I've seen a few weird brands fairly cheap. One in particular is a used "Armsor" 1911, Mil-spec.. I saw it for $310 used. I was told they are made in the Philippines, have descent tollerances shoot same/simlar to the other milspec 1911s & overall are supposed to be descent.

To myself I am a traitor if its not a colt or kimber, But ... those = $$$$$$$$$$$$$ I just want something that goes bang until I can pickup a kimber with a stainless finish... many years from now.

I even was checking out what what looked a pretty "done up" from the factory taurus 1911 clone for $480 something or high 400s.

What should I get. Or what are some options.

anything from the philipines is $hit. i have a "finished" slide for a 1911 from the philipines that wont even fit a 1911. never heard of armsor, so i cant say anything about them. tarus just needs to stick with revolvers, thats all im gonna say there. i have a s&w 1911 that is perty good. i like it. shoots almost like the colt my grandpa use to have, but not quite. nothing will ever be just like a colt. springfield is great. as close to a colt you can get for the price. thompson makes them, but they are pretty expensive too. if you have your FFL, try http://auctionarms.com. its like e-bay for guns. you can usually find them on there for a decent price. its a mistake if you go to a gun dealer enless theyre private, cuz they normally charge more than the guns are worth.

Doesnt Ruger make one? Not to offend anyone but Ruger has made some low-level products as Ive had experience with. So does Taurus. But IMO, if you want the cheap price, those are a better solution than the no-name knock offs.

ruger needs to stick with rifles. on my .308, it has a ruger mod.77 reciever, thats all thats ruger on it, but i havent had any problems with it. my old ruger .44mag carbine was fun too. not fond of their pistols though. i would try a s&w or springfield. its worth the extra money to get a good quality product.

Cheap and 1911 usually dont go well together. . . .

That said, some of the Rock Island guns are ok, but the best bang for your buck will be a no frills Springfield Armory GI Milspec. You can pick one up for under $500 or so.

And Ruger has never made a 1911.

Ah, never mind the Taurus.
I was just reading an article about them, it was saying how all the parts are "Custom fitted" at the factory & dont interchange. So, sounds like no drop in parts & not to good 'a tolerances?

I got gun fever. I just put up some of my higher end paintball **** for sale to fund it.

So Springfield or Colt? Thompson makes them under Auto ordinance, or Vice-versa. The guy at the shop I was looking at told me to stay away from them (AO).

Any quality difference between Colt/ Springfield?

IMHO, you're payin more for the Pony.

They are nice guns, but I don't like the Series 80 firing pin saftey that Colt sticks in all their 1911's these days. Kimber does too, but thats why I got a Series I. . . . .

SAI's Milspecs are going to be the best deal for a new 1911. They have a good warranty, and a lot of custom 1911 Smiths like working on them cause of the quality and tolerances of the frames and slides.

And just because I can, here's a little bit o 1911 porn:

Thats my stainless Kimber Gold Match Series I.

Since we're doing 1911 porn here's mine. Colt Combat Commander. I've had this for almost 30 years and never had a problem with it. 1000's of rounds put thru it.

I got the Commander because it's a bit shorter and I do take it with me sometimes, especially on trips.

taurus or rock island arms are two of the most cost friendly but reliable 1911's you can get rock islands run around 350$ taurus's run around 450-525ish depending on finish. I'd go with the taurus but being you can get after market internals for a decent price and a decent quality (especially if your wanting a target gun) i'd get a rock island arm 1911 clone and then fix it up the way you want. Out of the box performance i'd go with a springfield, kimber or wilsons combat but your lookin at some serious dough $$$$ there.

Only thing is colt in no longer making guns, they have moved on to electronics. Companies are buying the rights to make an exact replica of a colt, but colt in no longer in the firearm business.

^ where have you heard that? Their website doesn't say anything & I haven't seen or heard that anywhere.

I've actually heard they've concentrated efforts on making guns for the military, and only have been making small runs for civilians.

On another note. I "liquidated" some of my paintball gear over the past few weeks, and just picked up a 1911 today.

Its a newer Springfield mil-spec... aka, nothing special.
Got it used for $370 + tax/fees w/ 2 mags and case, out the door for just under 400. I looked at a used kimber (dont remember the exact series) for $595 out the door but, couldn't really spend that much at the moment. Anyway... this goes bang and something dies, Thats all that matters for now. The only ones I've seen cheaper where the junkier Filipino models. This is at least a Brazilian/American gun. look at the 22 vs the .45 lol

got a hell of a deal on that springfield good job. Around here even used they dont drop under 550$. Im goin for a Taurus 1911 march of 09 when i crank over 21 :) They have a pretty good setup out of the box for the 500-600$ price range. We'll see though. I'd like to get my paws on a used kimber but they're scarce in these portions.

If you know someone with an FFL that will get one for you there are a lot of good deals on the web.

Its not a 1911 but shot one of those cheap hi-point .45's tonight. Suprisngly for how cheap they are I rapid fired 10rounds in under about 4seconds. Due to how heavy they are they have slight recoil. Not the most accurate but would be great for home defense and it didn't jam under rapid fire. But I do believe I'll spend the 600 for my taurus 1911

Sorry, I'm a Colt man(but I do have a couple of S&W's). My Colt gov't model series 80.It was my first gun period, and I wouldn't trade it for any other. Bought it used in 1989 for $450 and it shoots great all stock.

Nice.

I would of loved to get a real .45(colt) like that in stainless, but just the regular blue ones I was looking at were $540ish

Taurus makes a pretty solid 1911 j894. Stainless. Runs around 570-600$ in these parts. Gonna be my first pistol before to long.

Yeah, I've looked at them before buying. Nice for the $ but I wanted a mostly milspec pistol for now, just to blow off some rounds.

Plus, I was buying used & Im not keen of the "custom fitted" parts on all of them. They all have different tolerances from the factory. Wouldn't want any nightmares if anything major woujld break and need to be replaced.

most 1911 parts are so common they can interchange with basically any clone. I've heard I think sig saur makes a 1911 clone? but their parts are hard to come by and taurus a couple parts you cant interchange also. Im not to sure my buddy knows all about them i'll ask him the next time i see him and let you know which ones all interchange parts wise and which clones dont

could be para ordernace dangit wish I could think of the company. If your wanting a good one and can fork out some dough I'd get a springfield, kimber or a wilsons combat

j894
07-28-08, 02:59 AM
I already have a springfield. Got it cheaper than the Taurus & it was more of the old school feel i was looking for. I wanted a real 1911 (Colt), but didnt have the extra $180 for it

eh its all personal preference. I like the newer ones compared to the other ones. Advantages being, slightly extended trigger out reach compared to it resessed more towards the trigger frame. Longer tail on the rear for added protection. You can buy those aftermarket though but I dont feel like forkin out extra dough for them. Authentic is a good way to go though for value. I just like to shoot them and like to have reliability when I need it too.
