View Full Version : swaybar swap issues

I just posted on protourings10 as well but I'll get all the opinions i can here as well :)
I tried swapping in a 33mm swaybar off of a second gen 2wd 2 door blazer and it seems like it's too narrow or not bent in the proper spots. It hits the frame with a load on the suspension - even on the tiniest bump. I think the blazer was a '95 - I took it off myself so I'm positive it was a 2wd. I'm pretty sure it's hitting on both sides, I made sure it was lined up well. Any suggestions?

Is it upside down?
Could need different length end links.

..note to self, don't install ZQ8 bar upside down.. Thanks for pointing that out! Now I'll be cautious not to do it the 'wrong' way.. I got a habit of that kinda shizz.

I looked at it this morning before I left for work (in the T/A) - yeah, it's probably upside down. I hate being the stereotypical nerd - 3 university degrees and no mechanical skill! :(

lol! It wouldn't have been a big job at all if the damn endlink bolts weren't rusty - it took some serious effort to get those nuts off!
I would estimate that it took about 45 mins to incorrectly install it so it'll probably take a few hours to put it in the correct way :banghead_

I compared it to the pics greencactus and s10driver posted on protouring and I'm almost sure it's USD - I won't have a chance to work on it til tomorrow though, it'll make a good hangover project

like DOJ said, it was an experiment to see how well you guys could trouble-shoot... yeah, that's it! :( :o
I just fixed it, it works much better right-side-up :D
Only took about 20 mins too since the endlink bolts had been on/off numerous times and I had lots of practice. Pretty impressive handling difference too (over the 28mm bar I had), more than I expected actually. I'm not sure whether it helped with rear-end traction in the turns though. I may have to experiment with the rear swaybar and see whether that actually helps or hurts.

I installed a set of energy suspension poly bushings a few weeks ago and I have to say I'm really not happy with them!
Just before I swapped bushings I had completely eliminated all of the clunking/popping noises in the suspension. I replaced the entire steering linkage and I did the hood hinge fix and after some adjusting those things seemed to do the trick.
Well the clunks returned worse than ever right after swapping to the poly bushings! I just took the endlinks off, regreased everything and tightened them back up with the truck at ride height and made sure the bar was aligned in the frame mounts - maybe a bit better but still clunking noticably.
How tight should the endlinks be? I tried them looser this last time and it obviously didn't work - should I sinch them down until I see the bushings starting to compress/bulge? Can the bushings split if they're too tight? The link bolts are showing just over an inch of exposed thread now.

I can't believe this is still going on.
I treat end link bushings the same as those on the top of shocks, tightening them a little past bulging. Don't think you could damage them. I did have them snugged pretty tight for a time in an attempt to rid the remaining body roll. They distorted slightly but nothing horrible.
