not sure if it has a vaccum on that tranny for the year or not i'd check to see if it does and see if you have a leak or blockage.

Well i am having problems with second gear and when i put it in overdrive it makes grinding noise or wont go in overdrive. So i think the tranny is shot.

If the TV cable is not adjusted right it will destroy the tranny. To put it in real simple terms cause I'm lazy and don't feel like typing it all out. The TV cable controls the pressure that shifts the tranny.

Most likely the 2-4 Band is shot. If its grinding then its eating the drum. A new drum is about $50 and a good band is about $25 and up. Band can be replaced fairly easy with just pulling the tranny, removing the pump and servo assembly. But the drum replacement will require you to remove the input shaft/drum/clutchpack assembly and disassemble it then reassemble it. Not extremely difficult if you are mechanically inclined, you keep parts in order, have patience and a ATSG manual.
But basically you may as well get a full rebuild for all that trouble.

X2 exactly!

If and when you rebuild it, be sure to go over and get the updates for it.
What year is the tranny?

1989 700r4

1989 has not the most up-to-date internals. Id find a 1991 or 1992 year 700R4 to replace it with. Along with a good updated rebuild kit, thats as good as you get for those. 1993 was a changeover year and its hit or miss getting the right one for your application. 1994 and up are 4L60E's and electronically controlled. Somewhere along 1990-ish, GM renamed the 700R4 to 4L60. They re-assigned their ID system with the Hydramatic division for easier recognition.

4 means four forward gears (4 speed)
L means logitudally placed (rear wheel drive)
60 is a strength designation
adding the E means its an electronically cotrolled tranny.
