It would never be a 4L80 or 4L80E in th s-series.
How did you retrieve the code?
Wats the symptoms? If any

lets see i got the code off of my diagnostic terminal under the dash it blinked eight times pause then three times i think that means 83 right the code is stored in the comp even when i clear it comes right back. symtoms third gear in drive cant deside if it wants to go into third or not and when it does it drags on for a couple of second then it goes in to third. But in overdrive it goes in to third fine. would it matter if the tranny has ctf or not the truck calls for it,at least thats what the sticker says in the glove box.

Yup 83.
Hmm
I would say you have a pressure issue. Have you checked the fluid level and has it been serviced lately?

Did it flash code 12 first? If not you may have a code 53 which is a common EGR code.
Also drop the PCM down and drive while tapping the PCM. PCM failure will sometimes show up this way.
Have you had trouble with any other things not working, or working intermitingly?
