I want one. I've been looking at the Fab9 from Chassis Works because it seems very reasonably priced but the housing ends need to be welded on. Here are a couple of questions to start and I'm sure this thread will make me think of more.:D
So who has some info to share?
Anyone know anything about the center (Strange) that runs 12 bolt gears?
What companies besides Currie sell a bolt in?
Links?
Is the TruTrac a decent posi?
Help?:o
In case anyone is wondering, I thought about the 8.5 and it's to hard to find, to much and the 9" is lighter. Also there are so many more options available for the 9".

Currie is way over priced IMO. I've been looking at Chissis engenering, Strange and Moser. It may come down to whoever has the GM ends welded on. I have to check out the Summers Brothers, thanks.

IC. Ive never seen that rear B4. But says its been in racing app since 94.
Also says stock housings require mods....wonder what they are.

I don't think I'll even bother looking for a stock rear. I posted up that chart just in case someone needs it. Anyhow, so far it looks like the Fab9 is the least expensive which is nice since its a fabricated housing which is both lighter and stronger then stock.

What's the stock flange to flange measurement for the 2wd rear?

To answer my own question :);
2wd= 54" Outside of drum to outside of drum
4wd (non ZR2)= 59" out to out

Yes. I'm trying to gather as much info and as many sources as possible.

I was looking into the Strange center section with the 12 bolt gears and apparently you have to run a spool so that's out. Now it's onto research the aluminium centers from Moser and Strange. I found a new Strange unit on Ebay cheap but I have read the gears wear faster. Not sure if that is when they are used during drag racing or in general. I'll post anything I find.

Little update. It looks like Moser is the company to go with. Just waiting on some pricing for a bare housing with the GM ends.

Here is another option. I have had 9" rears in s10's before. I decided with my current v8's s10 to go with a ford 8.8. It is in my truck as we speak. It is a 31 spline, posi, disc brake, with 373 gears. It was a DIRECT bolt in. And is unshortened. It was out of a '97 ford explorer. And was only $300 complete at the junkyard with 50,000 miles on it in mint shape. No moving of the spring perches. Im sure I could put 500-600 hp to this axle with no problems at all.

good point, one downfall....

I know the 8.8 will handle anything I throw at it. The thing is I'm doing a 3 link and coil overs for handling and would like the lowest unsprung weight possible. Also I'm going to run C6 Z51 brakes and the 9" is available with the GM flange to make that a bolt on affair with the LS1 backing plates.
Thanks for the advise though.

Not when you're buying new wheels anyway.

You can have the bolt pattern re drilled. It's not that much but id is an added expensie to a brake job if you need rotors or drums.

Well lets just put it in perspective. I built a 9' for my last v8 s10. I had roughly $1200 in it. I bought new gears,a new posi unit, all the bearings, install kit and it was still a drum brake 28 spline. I bought an 8.8 which is stronger than the 9' I built axle wise and I got all the features that my 9' had plus thicker axles and disc brakes. And the 8.8 has 3-1/2" axle tubes vs. the smaller 9' tubes. All for $300. And I can buy parts for it at any parts store. 4 wheel drive magazine did a strength test on a 12 bolt chevy rear vs. a ford 8.8. The 8.8 came ahead when the 12 bolt twisted an axle apart.

Thats fine.
I have my reasons for the 9" such as the alluminum center section, weight and brakes. Plus I could swap gears in a matter of minutes rather then hours if I pick up a second chunk.

So your going to buy an aluminum center section? How much money do you plan on throwing at it?

Also I would prefer to choose the appropriate width for whatever rims I decided to use.

Probably about 1,800 to 2,200 when it's all said and done. That's with the brakes. I know it's pricey but it's what I want.

Wow! Is it like an 9 second truck or something?
87wildside
07-22-08, 02:01 PM
No, not at all. I'm back halving it with the 3 link/ Watt's link and Varishocks to go attack some corners. The plan is to autoX it and maybe hit some road courses. That's why the unsprung weight is such a concern. If it was leaf sprung still then I would do the 8.8 swap. I actually looked into it and also looked into the 8.5.

I just added it up real quick and it came to 1,720 before shipping and w/o brakes from Moser. I'm also still thinking about the Fab9 from Chassis Works which is slightly less.

A basic built 9" starts at around $900. Thats cheaper than a 12 Bolt. But its adding hardened or more splines on the axle, the carrier, gear options, c-clip eliminators, brake setup componets, etc that gets the price going up.
I was going to put a 12 Bolt Moser in my TA one day. Price started out at $1200 and after I added all the goodies I wanted it was $2200 + shipping.

I want a new housing so that pushes the price way up. I did find one from a 66 mustang on egay for $50 + shipping but let it go.
