Hey guys,
Got most of it back together within the exception of a few vac hoses whcih i don't think matters. The truck wont start but it cranks and sounds like its almost going to fire.
I have spark
I have fuel
I was thinking its probably my distributor in wrong here is a pic of how I have it in. Rotor points to my #1 when at TDC compression
any help would be appreciated
Thanks,
Greg

looks like the EGR Valve doesnt have its vaccuum line on it, I would plug that in. You'd be surprised. Vaccuum leaks can cause huge running/driveability problems. Try giving your distributor a bit of a turn, could possibly be too far advanced/retarded.

id check for vacuum leaks, are you sure the intake gasket is seated right and not pinched or shifted anywhere?
Could it be out of phase? Meaning at #1 on the exhaust instead of intake? Or maybe just too retarded? Have you tried advancing it so far that it kicks back on the starter when you start it?

Hey guys thanks for the suggestions. I was away over the weekend so I will give it a shot again tomorrow.

X2 on the TDC right compression stroke.
Double check your fire order.
X2 on vaccum connections.

Soo to fix the "phase" would I pull distributor and rotate the crank 1 full rotation and reinstall distributor?
Thanks.
Your plug wires look screwed up? It's supposed to be: Distributor Wiring, 1,6,5,4,3,2 Clockwise
Engine (plug location) 1,3,5, on your right, front to back, 2,4,6 on your left, front to back, as you're facing the motor.

It looks to me from the picture that #1 is going to the wrong side and number 6 is going to the wrong side too.
# 1 is drivers front. If it is a 4.3.

Now that I look better it must be a 2.8??

I agree with everyone on the vacuum lines. Plug those back up. My truck will die as soon as one is disconnected at idle.

Yes Its a 2.8 . In my manual I believe it is as per my badly drawn picture below.

Yup, I assuming 82-85 2.8L... so 1-2-3-4-5-6 and your number 1 is exactly where it is on our 83.
To check to see if it is out of phase (if the exhaust is opening and the rotor is pointing #1 then it is 180 degrees out of phase). You can first check to see if both rocker arms on #1 are 'loose' - you can wiggle them.... then rotate it slightly - just until the exhaust starts to open to see if it is out of phase... if the rotor is point 180 off, not at #1, then it is correct. If it is pointing to #1, it is 180 degrees out of phase. If so, continue to turn it all the way back to TDC (360 - 1 revolution) and that should be TDC intake... reindex the dizzy back in pointing at #1...
I don't think the vacuum to the EGR would cause it not to start...
Sorry, thought it was a 4.3, then what I said don't apply :o But, I do agree with Tink,^^^ I was gonna say to do this next.

Well I reinstalled the valve covers and sealed them up because it was hard to get all the other hoses brackets etc on later. How about I do all the vac lines try it ... and if its still no good then I will just flip it 180 and see what happens?

Ok Boys.....
-I hooked up all vac lines and tried it out ... NO DICE
-I turned the ditributor 180 degrees .... NO DICE and it seems to back fire out the carb when I hold the gas petal down.
