I remember a while back seeing someone post up the PCM part numbers and the interchangability of them But IDK who it was. Maybe Jason (hammer head) ???
Anyways, I was going to get a custom tuned PCM one day but dont want to have any downtime sending my stock one in.
But maybe to save some money I could buy one from the junkyard and send it in. I know Wait4Me will supply one with a custom tune re-VIN'd for my truck but its more to do it that way. If I can get my own PCM here cheap and send that one for the $75 tune, I may be better off that way.
I just need to know what part number I need 2 look for.
Mine is the LS1 / Newer Delphi model.
My truck is a 2003 4.3/X/5sp/RegCab
My stock PCM ID numbers :

One I found on a 2001 4.3/Ext/Auto in the yard :

I also found one on another S-series. It was a 2002 Blazer 4.3/4WD/4dr and the numbers on it was Serv - 12200411 / HDW - 09386530

I'm not 100% sure but I think I read somewhere that as long as the service numbers match then they can be used.

Yep, it was me. I'll look & see if I can find the thread. If not I'll repost the info.

Well all of those are 12200411 and are showing up to 2002 on most all of them.
So my 2003 is a different number ( 12581565 ) . So does that mean those wont work? And I will need to be looking for the same Service ID number on a 2003-later vehicle?
THX Jason
I think all 2000 or 2001 and newer are interchangeable. They use the Ls1 style computer.

Its 2001 and up. I have a 98 and a 2000, same PCM.

X2. My hypertech works on vehicles from 98 to 2000.

They should both have the same pin-outs & plug-in the same way. The difference is problably an upgraded tune. But that's just my suggestion.

OK. I need to call a tuner and see what I should do. If they are reflashing them and all the pinouts are the same (V6) , then I dont see why not.

Why call when you have one right here...LOL! You need to have at the bare minimum the same style of PCM (i.e. LS1 Style)...and if you can swing it...the same OS (i.e. #12212156 for my 2002 S10 L35)(i.e. #12579405 for a 2003+ S10 LU3) to make the transition easier. If you don't have the correct OS...you have to perform an OS (Operating System) reflash. This reprograms the new PCM to utilize the new pinouts...otherwise some sensors will not function and you could possibly send data/voltage that could corrupt the PCM flash. One other thing to keep in mind...some PCM's after 2003 have larger memory capacity on the ROM!
Mine has 512kb total memory (flash is around 480k)....and some S10's have the 2003 PCM's and the new 1024kb memory capacity which will not work because of the OS requirements (approx. 720kb on to the ROM).
Just things to keep in mind....try to stay within your year range and model. The main reason is Flash Volatility....an OS is much more critical as far as bit-to-bit communication between the PCM and the Flash Software/Hardware. If you manage to drop a data packet during the OS reflash, you can potentially damage a mem sector/block...your seed#'s will be corrupt and check sums will fail due to the inconsistancy in the flash image and ruin your PCM:eek: The reason is that anything less than 512kb('01-'02 some '03's), 1024kb(2003+), or the new 2048kb (2007+Vette) will register a fault on the board not being able to read all the ROM (account for all the mem blocks)
There are a few programs that can recover bad sectors of ROM or render them null to use the remaining ROM (basically fools the mainboard into thinking all is well) because the OS is always a few hundred kb shy of the max capacity of memory:D
Most reflashes you will see are partial (about 30secs to perform)...meaning they will only edit the values you change in the program, not the entire OS, will verify seed#'s, PCM ID, check sums, and verify the Boot Loader (Allows you to "Hack" or "bypass to reflash" the ROM) everytime to keep data integrity. These are fully recoverable and just requires you to turn off the ignition and/or fuses to PCM and just repeat the steps to perform the reflash again.
Just some info of the top of my head...if you gots other questions...ask away:D

Lotsa info THX.
I have a 2003 and the one picture posted is my part number.
I want a spare PCM so that I dont have any downtime when I send it to W4M for the tune. I just figured it would be cheaper to buy a spare PCM locally at the junkyard than to buy one from them and have it tuned.
My only other concern is the Crank Relearn. But the dealer or a shop with a GM Tech2 should be able to do it for under $30 I guess.

yup...just did mine after the Cam pos. sensor took a poo in the dizzy. $30 part almost ruined my trip to Niagara Falls. Thank god for the crank pos. sensor or I'd be walkin'. I always do a relearn after a major hardware change that controls fuel or spark. Thank god for tuning software! Mileage went back to around 20mpg now....amazing how one of those stupid sensors can really effect your power and mileage! Went from 250miles a tank to 320miles a tank....i'd call that a difference:)
I also want to have a back up pcm to send off for tune. I have a 99 serv # 16263494. Its not the LS1 type. (Black with fins) What will interchange with that? Or can I send in any PCM with the same design and let them flash it to my vin?

It's an original Vortec PCM (the black cover/fins was the main identifier)...(1998-2000)Silverado, Suburban, Tahoe, S10 Blazer/S10, and Express Van. There are loads of them...but like I said...you need an OS swap if it has a V8....If it has the 4.3 V6...(base model Silverado's, Express Van's, and ofcoarse the S-series)...then your good....the tune my not be dead on...but you could drive it:)

I had the Crank Relearn done at a chevy dealer close by and they did it for free since it only took them a few minutes. Also some scan tools can perform a relearn... I'm just not sure which ones.

i got a quick question for you guys i have motor trans and most of the wiring harness from a 99 silverado (v8) is that ecm the same plug/pinouts as my 98 s10 (4.3) ?

I have a 95 with a 4.3L W code, PCM # 16193495 (black w/ fins). I've been told by every tuning company including pcmforless and wait4me that the 95 computer can't be done at this time (guessing due to lack of demand). Can I swap a PCM from a 96+ CPI truck and have it tuned for my truck? Are the hook ups and wiring harness the same or would that require swapping a lot of other stuff?
Reason being is I want to get a gas mileage tune, get rid of some torque management and eventually get a wynjammer S/C but I can't do any of that because I have the one year that can't be tuned.
