I’m going to have my 4l60E overhauled and I wanted to know is a hardened gear shell worth looking into. I was planning on a Transgo shifter kit, second gear servo, monster bands. Should I bother with this. The ad is below
"You're looking at a new "The Beast" sun gear shell for the 700R4 and 4L60E. This is one of the main weak points in these transmissions and is becoming a very popular item to replace. With this new hardened unit, you will eliminate this potential problem. This unit is a must in high HP applications, but would be a nice upgrade for any 700R4 or 4L60E."

The sun gear is indeed one of the weakest parts in the transmission. Even in stock applications, they blow up.

That isn't funny, mine is banging and it has about 28K on it.

They are about $50 and are a good upgrade idea since youre doing a rebuild anyways.
Yes, its a common problem area.
Yes, Ive had one shatter on the TransAm B4. Ive been through 6 rebuilds since 95 on it. Ive had about every failure known happen

Damn! 6 rebuilds I thought I had bad luck with transmissions. Never a problem out of my tranny though, lol.

Yup 6

First time was a year after I bought it and was behind the 305. That was just clutchpack failure from years of wear and lack of maintenance.

2nd time was mu own damn fauil trying to hold gears and downshift everyday.

One of the next was a Sunshell gear which in turn cracked the weak sunshell or it couldve been the other way around.

Also had a Rear Panetery gearset part company.

Not but 2 miles down the road after that rebuild the tranny shifted into 2nd and sounded like a bucket of bolts in my floorboard. The output shaft had gotten fractured due to the planetary gearset going out and it was a hairline fracture that wasnt noticed during re-assembly. But it damn sure was obvious afterwards. The round holes drilled through the shaft for oiling now looked like 2 close half-moons since the shaft in turn twisted.

Recent one was 2-4 Band failure due to the jackoff rebuilding my tranny for a 355 SBC with relined genero crap. I wish Id find that ****er again, I got a sack of poop to throw at his face!

And this time I decided to do it myself.
