I am curious as to if anyone has any personal do's and dont's of oil additives.I work at pepboys so i have a tremendous selection.With my 87 blazer s-10 having 234k miles on it i want to flush it.Kinda scared that even flushing it might break/free up something that might not need to be.You know if not broken dont fix it.Also i see some stuff there called Restore.There is a 4/6/8 cylinder black and chrome container.It is supposed to bring more combustion back to motor.Or might go with the Lucas.Anyone have any thoughts on what might be good for me?

Restore has been on the market for sometime now, it is pretty good stuff made to go in and fill any small scratches on the cylinder walls to help compression.Plus losen up piston rings that may be stuck.

Of course Lucas, a lot of people swear by it, how good it is, especially the Lucas Trans treatment.

There is a new product, that came out not too long ago made by Taylor, the same people that makes Taylor plug wires, it's in a black bottle kinda like the Lucas bottle, the name of it is something like ZX2, XP2 or something like that, If you work at Pep Boys you might wanna look for it, I work at Oreilly's we sell it, and many people that were buying Lucas is switching to this stuff, You might want to consider this and give it a try.

I do know Restore does work, I've seen a lot of people waste it though, lol lol by not shaking it up before they pour it in, I've used it on several of my vehicles, and I like it. Although I am thinking of using this newer stuff by Taylor this go around just for the benefit of the doubt

Chances are if you start trying to clean out the inside of your engine, more bad will come of it than good. There is alot of gunk in there that helps the gaskets keep the engine from leaking. Take that stuff away and you may have a powerplant that uses as much oil as it does burn gas. Also, loosening up mass amounts of sludge may clog your oil pump pickup and oil filter... as well as make your lifters tap. After 200k... I'd either pull it apart and have it rebuilt clean as new... or leave it alone.

But if you really want to clean out your engine... try ATF... It's a cleanser as well as a lubricant. Add one quart to your engine on top of the full oil amount and a new filter and I guarantee your oil will be black as road tar in 500 miles. I did it to my S-10 back in '03, and had to change it again after 1000 miles because the gunk was dragging my oil pressure down. Synthetic oils will do the same thing... They shear the crud right out of an engine.

Oh yeah we used to do that years ago, running a quart of ATF in the oil back in the 60's and 70's worked really well, good for the lifters too.

But most deffinately wanna be carefull trying to clean the sludge out of your engine, you'll be kicking yourself for it.

I like Marvel Mystery Oil... works in the engine and the fuel system. I have no idea what it is. I just know it works.

Lucas, I would say, is the best oil additive. Works great, especially with synthetics, since it makes the oil stick to engine parts longer than oil alone.

Synthetic oils are great since they don't gum up an engine, and can take pressure better, but synthetics don't stick to engine parts as long as conventional oils after shutdown. Any car I've used straight synthetic in always sounded like it was dry-starting every morning when I would leave for work. Conventional oils, or synthetic blends didn't do that as much. Adding Lucas to synthetic oil, or any oil, never gave me that dry engine knock in the mornings.

I've used Rislone... It never seemed to do anything.

I like Slick 50 teflon additive. It works great in engines with conventional oils. But I've heard that Teflon interacts badly with synthetic oils, so I've never used it in an engine with synthetic.

4qts Syntech and 1qt Duralube,have used Duralube w/ conventional
oil and synthetic,I like it.

I used to use Slick50 with conventional oil. Now I use Lucas with Synthetic oil.
