I have a 2000 4 cyl

Heat went out yesterday. Blower works fine. Distinct smell of coolant around the engine. Engine temp is low. After a quick visual it appears I lost the coolant via a hose or something somewhere under the battery.

Is the heater core down there?

Is there an engine diagram on this site or someone got a link to one?

many thanks

The heater core is inside of the dash. Follow the two small hoses from the water pump to the firewall.

When it cools off, remove the radiator cap, and see how much is left in the radiator. If you lost enough coolant to have the indicator on the dash to stay in the "c" it should be pretty easy to troubleshoot.

First CHECK THE OIL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Look for any moisture in the oil, and make sure the level is correct.

Then fill the radiator up with water, and start the engine and see where it is leaking from.

If you can't see where it is coming from, borrow a radiator pressure tester, and see if it loses pressure. Otherwise, the radiator cap could be bad and it pushed it into the overflow tank which then overflowed causing you to lose coolant.

The heater core is behind the fire wall. I'm gonna guess the hetaer hoses run up the passenger side of the truck. Check them first. Also check the radiator, overflow tank, and radiator cap.
