View Full Version : Weird sound
Hi gang, please excuse my english, it's not my primary language.
So this is my problem, I have a metallic grinding sound that seem to come from the middle of the truck. The sound is always the same for 5 to 60 mph. The sound is not very loud, but if I'm near a wall I can easely hear it. And when when I go slowly, and on a new road, I can feel a little vibration.
My universal joints are brand new and it's not a wheel bearing problem
I have a 1998 sonoma king cab , so my driving shaft is in 2 parts, I try to guess that this sound come from the junction of the 2 driving shaft. Is it possible?
Thx

Very possible that a carrier bearing is making noise
(Carrier bearing is where the 2 shafts connect)

I guess the carrier bearing is where I'd think the problem was too.

my wife's old 2.2 ext. cab did the same thing it was the carrier bearing. my brother's duramax had the same problem. my brother opted to switch to a single shaft after that.

Def sounds like the Carrier Bearing is going out.
BTW, is the truck lowered or a ZQ8 suspension?
Thx for the info!
For the suspension, no it's the original, but I've got some problem with. They reinforced my suspension and change my universel joint ( and they said they was not old, but they scrap because all my suspension with the differential wanted to turn on himself on braking)
I don't know if you will understand but I searched several minute how to say that haha.

Have they checked that carrier bearing or the double carain joint?
No for each other, when they fix my suspension(3 month ago) i had no vibration, only a little mettallic sound like I have actually. So they didn't check

carrier bearing is easy. just replace it and see what happens.

Hi gang, please excuse my english, it's not my primary language.
What's your primary language? Maybe we have some one on here that can speak it.
So, if I understand, my problem come from the carrier bearing?
But what is exactly the carrier bearing? Is it the part between the 2 driving shaft?

Yes, it is where the 2 drive shafts meet together underneath the cab/bed
