this is a go kart I made for my kids.... it was almost as fun as working on my sonoma! i'm to big, I can't drive it comfortably! it was a riding lawn mover that I widened and lenghtened. it is 94 inches long and 57 inches wide. powered by a 10 hp techumsie engine and a 5 speed belt drive transmission. the frame is 1 1/2 square tubing and the metal is .032 stainless steel, comletely hand formed my me and my hammer/vice/dollies ect... door open suicide and the interior is green leather (it was free) with black padded carpet. has a cool am/fm tape sterio and 2 6x9 blazer speakers and a 10" mtx subwoofer with a 200 watt bazooka amp. engine cooling is air cooled but I added a 16" electric fan. my daughter (7yrs) and my youngest son (3 yrs) love the hell out of it. my daughter taped the flames I just painted them. pretty good of a 7 year old! heck she's better than me! let me know what you people think! I was going to make a small s10 but I wanted it to be unusual!

I thought about making one for us "adults" using a 650 or something, then make them street legal. think about it.... conveiniance of a car.... MPG of a bike. don't get me wrong I can sit in it but only me would be in it! oh btw it took about two years to finish it. about 9 months to build the car, a year under a tarp when I was building the s10 and then about a month to finish it.

How much money you got into it?

hero dave
11-14-08, 09:37 PM
total $$ in it is probably around $800 but that is EVERYTHING....welding gas, cut off wheels, paint, engine, tranny, wheels, steering linkage....most of it is riding lawn mover steering. somethings are just leftovers from other "pojects"

yea...I thought that myself....my Dad always told me that he would make a gokart for me and my brother but he seemed to work all the time.... needless to say it never happened. I want my kids to like "mini-trucks" and rods hoping that this will spark the interest. I think it worked on two of them!

Can you build one that looks like a first gen blazer? I think S10planet needs a mascot.

Youve got me looking at trying my hand at a custom car cart. I found a running yerf dog go cart with suspension for $350. Then I would have to get fabricating. Did you take pictures along the way? Post some up of the build if you have them.

I do have pictures along the way! they are somewhere on the computer.... along with about 2 yrs of other picts. do you want me to tell you how I did it? the biggest thing is to get metal that is workable. I chose stainless because of the rust propertys, ease of welding and plain strenght of the stuff. it was also one of the eaziest things to find here. let me know, and I'll see if I can find pictures.

Sweeet! I always wanted one as a kid. I've actually got an old rider that was given to me. I was planning on fixing it up for the kids. Nothing that fancy though.

If you find the pics let me know. Any tips on how you did it woul be helpful in deciding if its something I want to get started on. Did you use an english wheel or was it all hammer?

didn't have acess to an english wheel...even though it would of been alot eazier! I did it all by hand. I also use a 6 inch vise, and a home made break. (two 2x4 with a couple of hinges) but mostly I rapped it around the frame that I made tacking it every 3-4 inches....slowly hammering and forming it as I went. the hardest part was getting the two sides to match, and the bending of the square tubing on the back round. that was a vise and my fat A$$ pushing on it...ripped the vise of the wall a few times :( but an easy fix!
