View Full Version : Exhaust Y-pipe to close to 4L60E pan?

Hello everyone,
I've been battling an overheating transmission since I've started daily driving my engine swaped silverado.
I have an external cooler mounted in front, in fact I just mounted a bigger cooler a few days ago.

But the transmission still gets extremely hot, enough that it begins to raise the engine coolant temp bust as much as 30* F.
A friend made my exhaust crossover pipe for me, does it appear to be too close to the trans pan and perhaps that could be heating up the trans fluid?

I figured I might wrap that pipe in header wrap to see if that helps and in worst case I might make a new y-pipe with more clearance away from the trans.
I was looking at going with a Derale trans pan, but I can't do it if the pan will act like a heat sink for the exhaust pipe

put a heat shield on the y-pipe.

Made a new Y-pipe. Good thing I did, my "friends" shop used section of 2.25" pipe & crimp bends.
So the new Y is a true 2.5" and as far away from the trans pan without going below the crossmember. We also wraped it to further aid in the heat

Did it stop gettin hot? Was that the only problem?

A little off topic, but on your youtube video of you V8, Did I notice a geardrive on that motor? If so how you like it and did you have the knock sensors delete?

looks nice. pipe looks alot better and has plenty of space now. lol

Would this also happen to a 5spd. Reason I ask, just got my Y done and it is really close to bottom of trans. Will get pics as soon as it dries up outside and quits snowing.

Be careful of that header wrap. I've had it rot pipes and headers out cause the crap holds water.

ditto, ive been told, if you wrap a pipe, you pretty much have to re-wrap it after every rainstorm

BUMP
My Y is just as close a Mykks in the 1st picture.... Is it going to matter on a 5spd? Or manual transmission?

I really couldn't imagine the manual trans getting too hot from the exhaust... I mean, they don't even have any pumps or trans coolers... completely different physics

Cool, but it does have gear fluid correct? I wouldnt have to worry about it would I?
Appreciate the help Mykk

Yes you have gear fluid but its not put to the stress like it is in the auto tranny. Its only used as a lubricant and not as hydro fluid.

X2.
But even gear oil will break down due to the heat. But as long as your engine is running NOT LEAN, the exhaust temps will be decent enough not to boil or thin the fluid.

Is there any kind of heat wrap that doesn't hold water? I'm going to be needing some soon.

There's spray you can use on the wrap to keep it from absorbing water.

The spray is just a silicone water resistant based type of deal and not totally water proof. We done it on our v8 s-10 drag truck and over 2 years had to replace the headers. Some guys I talk to on the net have used it and have not had any problems for longer period of times but me personally will be ceramic coating all of my headers for now on instead of using that cheap crap. The $120 for a coating that lasts longer than 2 years is worth more than the $25 for header wrap and $200+ for headers every 2 years.

I think the best route is a ceramic coating and then add some heat reflectant to the oil or tranny pan.

How well does ceramic coating work? I'm going to be mounting some solenoids for my air ride on my frame and they're pretty close to my exhaust...

I would try to find a different mounting spot regardless.

I could mount them outside the frame rail, but that's just ugly :p
I'll figure something out.
The mounting point is pretty far downstream from the Y pipe though. I don't think it would be too hot for it with some type of insulator.

build a heat shield and hope for the best.

I have an extra-large crossover pipe on mine 2.25 downs to 3in merge and 3in CAT....never gets hot....let me find the link to my pics:) Also added the Hughes Performance pan as well....extra fluid capacity without needed a filter extension and only requires a little grinding on the trans cable bracket by the bolt holes...sweet:D
Here is mine to get an idea:
