I am looking to rebuild my CPI 4.3. I am new to this engine and could use any help I can get. I am not looking to make a race engine but I would like to extract all the reasonable ponies I can and still be reliable. Besides the motor i already have a new complete MSD ignition: disty, coil pack, digital 6 box, and a set of Hooker super comp headers. I plan on replacing the entire valvetrain, cam, lifters, springs, retainers, roller rockers, ect. I plan on .30 over forged pistons, balanced and blueprinted, align honed, (everything you would do to a good street/strip engine build) Port and polish/gasket match the heads and intake. I can find no one local that has any knowledge of these engines 4.3 and or CPI. A balance shaft engine is this good or not? Which is better to build? Does the fact that I will internaly balance the works make a difference? What everf is done I want to do it right the first time. From the info I am gathering it seems to me it be best to build the motor around the limits of the CPI. So anyone with any info to tweak the CPI in anyway I am open to ideas. I dont know why, but I love this engine. many Thanks to all help and ideas. Awesome site. Jim

Well, some of us on the site love our CPI's. Others don't care much for them. There is a lot of info on the CPI throughout this site "keep dogging and you will find it". My understanding is that this engine is limited by an injector that is not upgradable. It is a very cool looking engine. It is a very potent little engine even stock.

IIRC it was the most powerful n/a 4.3
but yeah.. the whole one big injector thing does suck
to solve..
Swap too 98+ vortec heads and marine intake mani

I had the 266 in mine. It had a very strong mid range. The new one will have specs closer to the 270, but more intake duration.

How much of a difference could you notice? What other mods have you done? Thanks Jim

Custom tune, headers, exhaust cam, heads ported put me pretty much on the edge of the injectors.

Mine's bone stock. I'd like headers and a straight dual exhaust, after I get the bugs worked out.
