My buddy just bought a "68" pontiac firebird. He was told it has a 400 motor in it. We changed the oil today and put 5 qts in and it is way high on the dip stick, over full. Does anybody know how much oil this thing holds. Might not have orig dip stick in it.

5 quarts is what they hold. As you said, the dipstick might not be stock. How soon after you filled it did you check the oil level? If you did within 10 minutes or so, you're definitely going to get a false reading. The B-O-P blocks are like that -- you need to run them a little and let the oil settle afterwards to get a correct.

Filled it up started it and let it run about 5 minutes, then waited about 10 minutes and checked it.
This is a nice car. Nice as in project car nice. He paid $2k for it. No rust, but it has had some body work done b4. Motor runs good, has a little tick in the head area. It might be a sticky lifter, going to run some seafoam thru it. No bottom end noise. It starts right up though, even when it is cold. Has 3 speed auto. This thing will smoke the hell out of the 275/60/16 tires(one wheel peel). I am gonna get some pics of it for you guys to see. I had to rewire the tail lights and brake lights because, god knows who owned it before but they didn't do a very good wiring job. The brake lights didn't work, the turn signals don't work, nothing on the dash works, speedometer, gas gauge, nothing.
Over the next few years we are gonna work together to make it a drag car. Restore it to some originality. We are going to start buying parts for it and when we get the stuff we need it is going to go to the body shop. It is definetly a project car, needs tlc.

Ahh I love the first gen Fbodies.Back when Pontiac still had there own engines. If he got one in decent shape for that amount he is one very lucky man.The Camaro always got the the biggest glory and production numbers but the Firebird in my opinion was always the better looking car.Now don't confuse that for being the most powerfull one.No that title was the Camaro's and it earned it all it's own.The Pontiac engines basicly were not as good as a design as the chevy's were which is what led to GM using the chevy engine platform for all of the Fbodies. But I still love to see a vintage first gen Firebird with an original Pontiac engine in it.Post some pics when you get the chance.Id love to see it.Im gonna post up some history of the Fbody after this post just to let others who don't know all about them see how and why they were made.

If you didn't change the filter, but still put 5 quarts in for the oil change it would have too much oil in it.
