Depends on what "cheap" is to you. Name your price. But yes theres performance mods you can do to it.

Underdrives, filter, exhaust. But your perf gain is minimal with a 2.2 but its a strong motor. Turbo-ing is always an option with a small-cube powerplant

you can do mods but wont get ya what your looking for. Intake, plugs, plug wires and etc. And you get what you pay for. I just notice more mpg than horsepower.

Id say that depends on how many miles are on the engine. But all in all, im sure just a few times wont hurt anything.

x2 and n02 or forced induction aka s/c setups aren't to great on engines either. Turbos are the best route to go.

turbos10.com (http://www.turbos10.com) has just made a 4-2-1 (Tri-Y) header that when cobined with a good cold-air system & a stage-II Patriot head makes an estimated 160hp (Well... That's a considerable increase!). It's expensive, but worth it if you want a broad torque curve since no one else makes one (All others are the 4-1 style).

Their are not many mods for 2.2L S10's, but I'm going to put a cold air intake, plugs, plug wires, headers, performance catilatic converter (not leagle in Cal.), exaust, and upgrade the computer. You defantly have to upgrade the computer to get the most out of your new bolt on parts. Oh and NOS!
