Ok, I bit the bullet and decided to bring my 2.2 back to life one more time.
She blew a head gasket. Was goona sell it for parts, but got so many inquiries in less than 24 hours, it made me re-think my motives. (I was being lazy) So anyways, pulled the head, and now ready to rebuild, but, while I am here, I am thinking about fixing anothe problem which has annoyed me from day one of ownership. Tranny Leak!! Its coming from behind the cover plate on the front of tranny where shaft comes out. It's Not from the center where shaft exits, but from the outer seal which mates that plate to tranny housing. PITA, as I have to pull tranny to fix it.It only leaks when cold and has been sitting.
Question is, as I am not a tranny guy,
Can I just pop this plate off and replace the seal? Can I just get this seal alone?
Truck has 215K and I dont want to perform major surgery now, as I have other bills sucking me dry as well. Also, I guess easiest way for me to get at it is to pull block out and leave tranny intact, instead of other way around. Any advice greatly appreciated

Sorry, its an auto, 700R4

I'm back in my garage now for some more fun. Bought all parts needed to put engine back together. Gotta love these 4 bangers when it comes to part pricing. Cheap!! Thinking I will pull long block out tonight for access to front of tranny. The Seal I am talking about sits behind circular plate on front of tranny. ( Pump ?) Can this be changed out without having to drop pan ?

Ok, conflicting opinions. Need clarification. I only wish to pull pump out far enough to replace seal thats leaking.
Saw on another thread that someone stated they need to drop pan to remove the TCC solenoid and filter which is pressed into pump. Is this so?

I would say 99% of the people who read these forums have never even removed the transmission pump of a 700R4. Your best bet would either be to try it, find a rebuild manual, or to take it to a transmission shop. I have the manual for a 4L60e if that would help you, but I have never worked on a 700R4.

Thanks for the reply.
My bad, I have a 4l60E, not the 700R. Must have been the beer.
Anyways, in that manual does it show whether or not pump can be pulled out independent of dropping pan? Much thanks .......
