So once I put the L88 on I will be able to open up the hood and get some fresh air in. If I mod the air box or fabricate a new one, running some form of ducting from the box to the throttle body this would give me an out of the ordinary form of cold air intake. OOOH a functional cowl induction S10, fun! It wouldn't really do anything different than a regular cold air intake, but it would be different.
Thoughts?

Just to be different I probably will.

Should work better then an egay CAI since they pull hot air from under the hood.

Fresh air = horse power! I have to play with the box placement and will probably have to do modding, but to modding I am no stranger.

I can't help but wonder if that scoop would cause negative pressure. Is that first part cut out?

definitely waiting to see this unfold

Just the rear part is open. Basically its a fancy cowl induction scoop. I'm really close space wise to where I could duct through the cowl if I had to. But I feel an actual hood scoop is in order, for appearance as much as more room to work with. I decided that since the L88 looked good on an 81 El Camino, it will look alright on an S10.

My thought is, the air will have to travel forward to make it from the scoop to the throttle body. Is that going to cause problems?

Just run hood less..... Now that is cold air....

At the base of the windshield is positive pressure so it will have no problem moving forward.
I think that first...thing was to bleed of front end pressure and vent hot air from the rad but that hot air would recirculate back into the engine if my imagination works. :yuck_125:

My plan would block off most of the front of the scoop. Well, if you say it's good, I'm going to start cutting.

I played with the air box a bit. If I use the front "flat part" it sits better. The hood closes, AND it will provide me with enough air space where I will be able to seal off the scoop and draw air from under the hood when it's raining or winter. All I need to do is cut a hole, glass in a snorkel, and hook it to the throttle body, right? I figure that once the hood is done, I can get/ make a gasket to seal the air box to the bottom of the hood.

I figured. I got to thinking, with all the effort I'm putting into designing the rear of this truck, I had better try to do something special up front too.

So, if I run the snorkel out the front of the air box, I will have a tight bend, but the feed will be almost direct. If I run the snorkel out the side of the box, the bends will be less severe, but the air flow will have to travel a greater distance. It would probably be easieest to run it out the side, but then it also runs right over the upper radiator hose.
So once again I ask, thoughts?
By the way, I've already cut some parts up!!!

04-10-09, 09:07 AM
I say keep it short if you can get tube with that tight of a bend.

cut and weld...
I'm hopeful that the slightly odd in appearance, four wheel drive with a 6 popper will be fast enough to suprise a few people. Actually I am really anxious to hear what the engine sounds like with an open element Air cleaner through a hood scoop. The CPI makes some pretty wicked intake noises with a sealed off system.

Here it is. I need to fiberglass the snorkel to the air box and make a tube to connect the air box to the throttle body. Would a 90 degree silicone elbow flex enough? If they for some reason made a 180 bend it would be SIMPLE!

I was just at OReily's,and they have some 3 1/2" flex hose for cai that would be perfect for that, looks kind of like a dryer vent hose cept it is corugated(?) instead of spiral wound w/o the wire,Blue and red.

Thanks Ricky!!! By the way, I think you should double check your connection on the IAC sensor before replacing it. Mine was loose. I need to replace the clip that holds it in.

x2, my connector's clip broke too. Once in a while it will pop out but its real obvious when it does. Between heat, and the wiring harness being 17 years old I have a few bad connections that need tending to.

Those would do it I bet. I wonder if I'd be better off using those kind of hoses or welding up a solid tube. I need to get some fiberglass for the air box, and that won't happen until pay day so I am going to do some digging. Thanks Ricky! Once I get it done I'll have to make and send one to another of my CPI brethren to see if it really does do anything performance wise. That stuff can be cut to length, right?.

This is by no means the finished product. But here is a rough idea "with dryer vent tube" of what it'll look like.

Check it! ignore the part where it starts to miss, "it always does that" hence I am in the troubleshooting stage. still on the dockett are more new ignition parts and a spider. maybe I'll have the heads redone. Maybe I'll just build a whole new engine...
At this point I'm still only out a whopping $675 on the whole deal.

Workies here. No, the first thing I bought was a distributor. I need "I think" a cap and rotor, and a coil Other than that, I know the injector is not perfect.
