Well looks like im gonna be the first one here to have a V8 S10. As of this summer I am gonna have a 5.7 TBI motor backed by another 700-R4. This means I am gonna have a 700-R4 for sale (mine is a 60 deg, i need a 90)

Yes, I will take pictures, but since I work at a kids summer camp during the summers I wont probably get them up until next fall. Im (hopefully) not gonna be around a comp for the summer. I need time

Ill be the first active member to be driving one daily. My problem now is finding headders. I want long tubes, but finding them for the 700 R4 is proving to be a pain. I considered stock manifolds for all of about a second. I need the 700 R4 because of the overdrive. I put a ton of highway miles on my truck

I've got the fever also. I've got an extra 4.3 sitting in the garage. But I can't decide. Build it up or go SBC. Of course money is a big factor.

Heh, I may have mine in before T-Man... Already have the engine, just waiting for it to warm up... Dumping in a 5.7 CSFI Vortec from a 99 Escalade... Keeping the existing transmission (4l60e) Will be using a k1500 ECM and harness. Only real mods to the engine will be the ls1 conversion headers, more agressive cam, and custom programming of the fuel curves on the ECM...(Done by www.rcsoa.com) We should eek about 300-320 out of it... :eyebrows_

hey rlith, what kinda increase you goina get from the computer tuning? and how much is it. i have a 00 s10 with the 99 tahoe 5.7 and ecu, would like to get it reprogrammed. i took the cheap way out and stuck with the 4l60e, MISTAKE! do yourself a favor and go all out the first time. the 4l60e is a granny shiftin POS!!!

Well the stock 5.7 is about 265hp... Between the cam and the reprogramming we figure about 300-320 hp...I'm sticking with the 4l69e but it's been rebuilt with a police pack (15 clutches), vette servo, and a shift kit.. I shouldn't have too much of a problem. BTW, outside of the tranny issue, what problems did you run into with wiring? Or was it pretty much direct plug in? (trying to gain as much info before doing the swap as I can)

T Man
03-12-05, 01:09 PM
Just to clear things up, the 5.7 was discontinued in trucks in 97 I believe. The 5.3 repaced it with the body style

rlith
03-12-05, 02:26 PM
I pulled my 5.7 from a 99 escalade.. The escalades and tahoes still can get the 5.7

Maximus
03-13-05, 02:20 AM
That's not really true to a point.Actually the 5.7 was still offered in the Escalade and Tahoe up to 2000.They're were no Escalades made in 2001 and the generation III vortec engines debuted in them in 2002.So he could have a 5.7 vortec.

I know in the half tons they were 96-98 for the 5.7L. And as for headers they sell they over at s10v8.com in there store or was it v8s10.com. I think there is three different types??.... short, and long tube and ones for 4x4s. Haven't been over there in a while. Working on the 2001 now that it is almost spring. Hopefully s/cing it. I'll switch over to the 89 Jimmy and the idea of a v8 in it, back in the fall/winter.

well....T man your wrong. as far as wiring...only a few problems(asuming your doing a 96+ truck with the vortec engine). knock sensor needs to be relocated. injector plug needs to be re-pinned.wires need to be added to the harness(if you use the v6 harness). o2 sensor....still havent figured those bastards out(have to add wires for 4th o2), cant get the rear ones to work correctly. left v6 radiator in stock location and put two REALLY THIN 12" fans between the radiator and condensor(and ran relay so they would come on at 190*). swap is not as bad as people make it out to be. pretty much plug and play. on the tranny cooler lines i had to change the lines. other than that stuff your good to go
also used stock driveshaft...2000 ext cab xtreme...3.73s, lot of wheel hop, 14.8 at 96. this pissed me off pretty good. stock 255hp and 330lb/ft

you know what they say about assuming.

It is either a TBI from a late 80's to early 90's (need comp and motor, the wiring harness can be retained) or a TPI, in which case i will buy a donor car and just strip everything off of that

Glad you replied to this... My version of the 95 is the same as the 96/97 ecm and harness goes (obviously the pig tails are different) I just did a small write up on this. I plan on using a 96/97 k1500 harness and ECM so I don't have to add the wires or the 4th 02 sensor... :D Last question, did you change your ABS unit to a 94 or did you leave your existing one in there?

sbcxtreme
03-14-05, 07:00 PM
you sure the 96-97 v8s dont have 4 o2's? no, i did nothing with the abs and it still works. bought a hypertech to fix the speedo. bought a dakota digital tach calibrator. and one more thing, the airbag light will come on and the airbags WILL NOT work(at least it did not with my 00 s10 and 99 engine). the tahoe had a stand alone airbag module or something like that, whereas the s10s are integrated.
if i could re-do this swap from the get go then i wouldve either did an ls1, or built the vortec i have(pistons, cam, stroker...etc). do not put the engine in stock and then be disapointed down the road.

Well, with the 96/97 k1500's it's a crap shoot on the amount of 02 sensors it has, just like the blazers. I know that the k1500 doesn't have a stand-alone system. The ecm I have accessory wise is pretty much the same thing as my blazer.

As to the build up I'm keeping it simple. Simply adding a more agressive cam and having some of the fuel curves adjusted. The guys at www.rcsoa.com think we could squeeze about 300-320 out of it.

I'd like to talk to you more on your swap in private at some point if you wouldn't mind.

so i think i found my summer project. 450$ for a 77 van with a brand new crate motor in it. i get the whole van... minus the tires and wheels for 450.... or they could pull the motor for me for 500$... so i figure hey... get the whole thing for 450... take the motor... donate the rest to the local fire dept.. so they can practice jaws of life on it... and there is a tax writeoff.

I belive jake has a pic a 2nd gen v8 on his website.

I really don't understand why yall or have so much trouble finding v8s. There a dime a dozen. Look for wrecked or high milage GM cars that have a v8 in them. like for example a capri, for arond $1500 You can get a car with comp and complete wiring harness with a ready to run engine(after rebuild).
as for the issue of year, that's a by the state deal so check you state laws before you losen the first bolt.

Know as for the issue of a v8 transplant in a vehicle that had a relitivly small engine before. If you've never done this you need to do some research. I tell this to everyone... If your seriuosly looking at this as a performance platform not just a truck to burn tires off of there is more to it than a couple of engine mounts and a radiator. You still have to get that power to the ground.

I have a L98 TPI engine, ecm and harness out of a 90 Formula Firebird. It makes decent power in stock form at 245hp and 345tq.The good thing about the TPI 350 is the amount of parts available for them at a reasonable price. If I don't decide to do anything with it im gonna sell it if anyone is interested in it.It only has 51k original miles on it.It's all stock except the cam in it.It has a Comp Cam XR264HR and new Comp springs.I know I installed it for the guy before he pulled it out.His now has a LT4 in it.If I do sell it I will post up a price and everything.
