Hey all. On my '98 sonoma SLS the front speaker grills on the dash are about the size of 6 x 9 speakers I guess, but when I opened them up the damn things are maybe 2 x 3. I was wondering if I can put bigger speakers in these and what's the best way of doing it? The grills themselves only have the smaller openings as well so not sure about reusing them. Also, how do you get the speaker covers off the door mounted ones? Do you have to remove the whole door skin or what? Thanks for any help you guys and/or girls have. Later, Darren:cool:

The dash takes 4x6 plates and the doors are 6 1/2 I think.
You have to remove the door panels for the door speakers.

4x6 plate's always sounded the best to me over the regular 4x6's.X2

Yup, 98- up is 4x6 dash and 6 1/2 doors.
The door panel has to be removed.
Door removal :
unscrew phillips behind door hadle and remove cup. sort of clips at the back
remove 2 7mm bolts/screws up and under the recessions where you grab the door to close. they are silver headed and up in there a bit
use a panel popper to unclip the top push clip behind the sidemirror area. than work along the edges of the panel and remove the rest
if power equipped you needed to unpop the power switch panel and unplug the electrical plugs
if manual windows you need to remove the crank. there is a c-clip you can use a removal tool or a 90* pick to get off. pita but doable. be sure to cup your habd around as you remove it or it will fly off and be lost.
Concerning the dash. I have a plate made that holds the 4" MRange from my Boston 3-way componet set. Ive seen and done sucessfully a 5.25" speaker up there with little to no modification to the dash and cover. Depends on the height of the speaker and the depth along with the basket diameter. Ive seen a custom made grille that was made from 1/2 MDF, used some fiberglassing and housed a 6.5" speaker. There was a magazine article a few years ago (may heve been SportTruck or MiniTruckin that showd that being done.
Be careful with the depth of the dash 4x6 plates, they need to be pretty shallow, some plates won't fit. It may be more an issue with Blazer/Jimmies than s10 (I believe I've heard that). I just know some of the 4x6 plates I've tried (like clarion) wouldn't fit depth wise.
