I would jump on it. That is if everything checked out on it. I want a little daily beater with a 4 banger. Or maybe one of those s10's with the little diesel engines.

An LS-trim Double-deuce'd '96 w/5-spd, for $1000... Man, I envy you! I'd grab it in a heartbeat. But after I did, I'd look into replacing the timing-chain assembly. Reason is the factory chain tended to not last much beyond around 100,000mi, because within the initial years they put the LN2 into the S-truck it was just a J-car long-block with the coolant ports & oil-pan sump relocated. The sump relocation starved the chain & tensioner of precious oil that came from splash in the FWD apps, and that effected the lifespan of those components. And when they let-go, well... lets just say I have experience with the best & worst that could happen (X2).
Later years received an orifice-style galley plug that supposedly was added to help bleed air from the lifter galley (It's the first thing feed on this engine!) but it also supplied necessary lube to the chain-set, thus extending it's life to lengths of that found with FWD-app versions. I believe this began with the '98-up versions...
If you do replace the chain-set, use the GM replacement parts. Why? They seem to be the only ones that meet the standards. I've seen & have heard stories of "el-cheapo" replacements fail after as li'l as 30,000mi, and I'm sure you don't want to be doing the replacement again anytime soon after doing it once.

Have it checked by a certifid maechanic first. In my experience, if a truck like that is for sale that cheap then there's something he's not telling you. If it realy is as nice as it looks then I would say pounce before someone else does.

Check the frame carefully for any signs of rust-through. My '94 was okay when I got it, but after a few years in my gravel driveway (Parking for long periods over anything but poured pavement guarantees rust!) it developed two enlongated rust holes on the frame, just forward of the forward rear-spring mount & just above the lower bend of the C-channel.
